I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. ðŸ˜.

It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring. This chart borrows some ideas from the version recorded by Harry Connick Jr. on his album Oh, My NOLA. The chart features a Big 4 groove and solo space to feature the 1st Trombone, 1st Trumpet (written solo) and 2nd Trumpet (ad lib solo). Brass ranges are moderate with 1st Trumpet requiring E6 at one point in the piece, although this could be played 8vab. The arrangement is in the key of Bb as on the original recording. The first track on The Temptations in a Mellow Mood, an album released as a crossover to white audiences, this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein tune is a great example of The Temptations close harmony skills. This is an arrangement for Big Band with Solo Male Vocal and TTBB, playable by intermediate ensembles and transcribed note for note from the recording. Starting in a Latin style reminiscent of Manteca, this arrangement is mainly in a big band swing style and briefly transitions to a jazz waltz in the middle section. Due to the vocals being featured, the horns are used sparsely and there are few sections where extended rehearsal is needed. Although the album itself doesn't break down who arranged this initially, it more than likely is an Oliver Nelson creation. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download.
