NEW BLUE SHOES is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2003 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. This arrangement will work equally with a reduced ensemble, as indicated on title page of the score. The arrangement begins with a unison statement of the head from the trumpet section with the sax section taking it up later in the arrangement. Rhythm section parts are fully notated to assist younger players. There is solo space for any trumpet, trombone, and sax with changes and written solos included on every part in the appropriate section of the arrangement. Use this space to feature soloists in the group and encourage all to try their hand at improvising. Encourage students to listen to the great jazz players to help them learn the language of jazz and develop their own ideas. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862507). Here is a blues in C minor, a staple of jazz groups both large and small. This chart has several unusual aspects, all set within this familiar format. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, “national pep”. This is known as the Stride theme because of it’s resembling a typical stride piano accompaniment so prominent in the era. Here, it is presented as a stand-alone tune. Little Big Band- The arrangement is playable with rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass, drums)and 3 to 6 horns. Horns in order of importance: 1st Trumpet (1st Part), Alto Saxophone (2nd Part), Trombone (3rd Part), Tenor Saxophone (4th Part), Baritone Saxophone (5th Part), 2nd Trumpet (6th Part). Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. I wrote this chart for the Madison County (GA) Middle School Jazz Band a couple of years ago and named it after the river that I would cross each morning as I entered that county on my way to the school from home. All rhythm section parts are fully notated in this chart, but these serve as suggestions and tools for building improvisation and comping skills. The same can be said for the written solos for tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone. Each solo section can easily be opened / extended for improvisation. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.
