Fanfare (for 4 or 5 wind instruments and rhythm section) was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. Suggested assignment of parts for a big band: I -- 4 trumpets (open); II -- clarinet, soprano sax; III - alto sax, trombone (open); IV - tenor sax, trombone (cup), trombone (bucket); V - baritone sax, bass trombone (open). Published by Gerhard Guter (A0.844247). Here's something different -- a jazz quintet (two trumpets, alto sax, tenor sax, and trombone) of the Coltrane classic with either bass or tuba! Plenty of meter changes to keep things interesting; the writing may bring to mind some of the jazzier arrangements of the Canadian Brass, with a written walking tuba bassline. With the optional repeat, the chart weighs in at about three minutes, and could even be performed with both tuba and bass as the parts are virtually identical. Brass ranges: Trumpet = Bb5, Trombone = Ab4Demo performed and produced by Gerhard Guter .

You've heard Nothing You Can Take From Me from the film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes (sung by Rachel Zegler) many times, but you'll be gladly astounded to hear this big band chart that puts a spin into it with great measure! After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. This chart is perfect as a concert opener, anchorer or closer, and it's another good twist of the saying something old, something new in a refreshing way. Jazz Ensemble. Latin and Swing, multi-meter. The Dizzy Gillespie classic features Trombone 1 playing the melody as a half-time ballad against Latin style rhythm accompaniment. After an optionally open solo section (in swing tempo), an ensemble soli (without rhythm section) leads to a jazz waltz by the lower voices. The final section features Alto Sax 1, Flugelhorn and Trombone 1 in an up-tempo recap of the melody. See Conductor score for an overview.
