The ensemble enters with a stronger statement that builds to the head.The guitar plays the A section of the head in octave or single notes. The bridges section swings as a single eighth note guitar line. The background starts with the sax section followed with counterpoint between the trumpet and trombone sections.The second time through the form, Tenor Sax 1 solos over the first half changes and background. The guitar takes over solo on the last half of the form which leads into an echo of the intro and builds up to the shout chorus.The shout builds to a melodic trumpet high D followed by an obvious quotation by the ensemble. Repetition of the ensemble intro with a main theme fragment is followed by brass pyramids and a final theme stinger to close out the piece. 160 bpm per quarter note is a suggested tempo but the piece can be taken faster for more excitement and energy. The piece is written in 4/4 for the swing bridge section. The samba sections should be felt in 2/2 with the accent on the 2. The quarter note always stays the same.

This is an alto sax feature ballad. The melody is full and rich and could make you think of Johnny Hodges. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

This is a Big Band 12 Bar Blues in C (with a few alternate chords) with an 8 bar bridge. The 8 bar intro has a few stops and starts that feature each section of the band (Might be good as an Introducing the Band sort of piece!) and the head begins at A with an Alto/Trumpet/Trombone lead line. The full band joins in at the bridge and brings us to the solo section with changes written in Tenor 1 and Trombone 2. At G, the rhythm drops out, leaving the band to build to a re-iteration of the head and on out. This is a Grade 2-3 with Trumpet top note of Bb. Musescore was used for the mp3 - so large grain of salt on the audio!

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!
