Your kids will be playing this tune a lot in the band room!Whenever chord symbols are present, bass players can make up their own bass lines and guitarists/pianists their own voicings. This chart's slow tempo and familiar harmonic structure can provide young players with a bridge to developing their own improvised bass lines and comping skills.The plunger work in the beginning is fun, but not required (in case you don't trust middle school students with plungers :))If your rhythm section players need easier or harder parts, let me know and I'm happy to provide.Feel free to add additional soloists if desired. Uncle Charles was written for Soundscape Big Band Jazz (São Paulo, Brazil) and is a medium up swing chart based on modified rhythm changes. The chart features an intro that has the bass instruments dueling it out early on. As the composer is a bass trombonist himself, he tends to give interesting and demanding lines to this instrument and Uncle Charles is no exception. On the high end, the trumpets can opt for an 8va Ab phrase if they are feeling brave that day (Listen to Jr. Galante on Soundscape´s recording to hear it well done)! The three soloists (trumpet and two tenors) constantly trade off solos between themselves and the bridge is always accompanied with an improvised second tenor solo (Uncle Charles in the case of SoundScape Big Band Jazz). All this along with wah wahs, plungers and Mingus like effects makes this chart fun and challenging.

Java is an instrumental adaptation from a 1958 LP of piano compositions, The Wild Sounds of New Orleans, by Toussaint, also known as New Orleans producer/songwriter Allen Toussaint. As was the case of the rest of Toussaint's LP, Java was composed at the studio, primarily by Toussaint.The first charting version was done by Floyd Cramer in 1962. His version fell just short of the U.S. Top 40.In 1963, trumpet player Al Hirt recorded the instrumental, and the track was the first single from his album Honey in the Horn. It was Hirt's first and biggest hit on the US pop charts, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 29, 1964 and spending four weeks at number one on the easy listening chart in early 1964. The song was also featured on his greatest hits album, The Best of Al Hirt. Hirt released a live version on his 1965 album, Live at Carnegie Hall. He also recorded the song with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops for the RCA Red Seal album Pops Goes the Trumpet (Holiday for Brass) in 1964.Hirt's recording won the Grammy Award for Best Performance by an Orchestra or Instrumentalist with Orchestra in 1964.This jazz ensemble / big band arrangement features your lead trumpet player with medium to easy background support from the rest of the band. With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild.
