D’oh! is as much about word play as it is about the rhythmic melody that uses the solfeggio syllables “mi†and “do†to create a clever musical pun and a tongue-in-cheek expression that reflects a disgruntled response to a sharp and accusative question.  Molded to the swing era this work echoes the style of Glenn Miller as it highlights the good-natured jazzy banter between these musical syllables, emphasizing the different features inherent in each section of the ensemble at different times in the music.  With its compelling momentum, Me? D’oh! is a snappy and light-hearted jazz piece that affords a great opportunity for young ensembles to play more individualized parts and build confidence in playing in the style of the great swing era bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

This arrangement is for my school Stageband and is going to be performed soon with our Gospel Choir and is a Semitone higher from A to Bb so as to allow students to learn and perform with confidence. In addition, the keyboard parts are transcriptions and adaptations written out with the chords should you prefer to use the notation as a guide. We have saxophones and are short of Brass so is arranged with the additional parts for a Brass Quintet if you require that and can be combined and mix and matched. I also use a Korg Stage piano in tandem with a Nord Electro 6D and a Micro Korg to allow versatile arrangement and performances of my arrangements. This arrangement includes 3 part vocal harmony and also includes the lead vocal line to be performed as a soloist depending on your preference. Parts include: Lead Vocal, 3 Part Vocal, Alto Sax 1 & 2, Tenor Sax 1 & 2, Bari Sax, (Brass Quintet alt) Micro Korg Hammond, Nord Electric Piano, Piano, Guitar 1 Guitar 2, Bass, Drums, Shaker Hand Claps Cow Bell Percussion.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. Written in a laid-back swing style, it is a minor blues scored for full big band but will work equally well with a smaller combination of instruments as indicated on the front page of the score. The arrangement features plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish confidence within their sections as well as more independence between sections. An open section provides a chance for everyone in the band to have a go at taking a solo. Backing figures are provided on parts and can be played at the director's discretion. Solo sheets are also included for Bb, Eb and Treble and Bass clef instruments with two fully notated choruses. Published by Boumpani Music Publishing (A0.1318219). This driving, Latin-flavored arrangement of the traditional carol Adeste Fideles (a.k.a. O Come All Ye Faithful) sounds great with bands of all levels, from professional big bands to high school jazz bands. After an introduction that repeats throughout the piece, the melody is presented with a soli in the 1st trumpet and 1st alto sax. The syncopated rhythms are repeated throughout, which makes it easier for school bands. There are plenty of opportunities for improvised solos over a 2-chord montuno that allows younger students to build confidence using a Bb blues scale (concert key). The rhythm section is also featured throughout and your drummer will love it (after all, it was arranged by a drummer!). Players and audiences alike will love this piece. Ranges are very reasonable with the 1st trumpet playing a written Bb above staff only twice, and the 1st trombone range going over the written F above the staff only once to Gb.
