Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. It is an interesting but challenging piece of music playing around with time signatures, interesting and tricky rhythmic displacement and a particularly challenging intro and melodic line for Double Bass. The piece is around five minutes in length with a solo section in the middle with hits for horn section. This piece was written in 2016 at Bath Spa University.

A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. In regards to the piano loop, while I have provided a transcription of what I played in the track, you are free to use this as inspiration to create your own.Performance time - 3 minIf you happen to record or film this piece, feel free to tag #JLTStudio ... This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised.
