Published by Dubba C Music (A0.1217081). Originally composed for jazz great Bill Watrous, Bossa for T.D. is a contrafact based on the chord changes to Tommy Dorsey's famous theme song. Scored for a full big band (5-4-4-4) plus trombone soloist, this chart begins in Bossa Nova style and changes to swing at the out chorus. It is accessable by a good high school or college jazz band. Grade 4.Ranges:Trumpet: Eb6Trombone: G4 (lead); Bb4 (solo - optional 8va on final phrase up to A5)About George West:Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

The second part displayed the beginning of his journey in his young age, surrounded with joy and excitement. The third section revealed the thought of the traveller, when he starts to miss his home. The fourth section shows his nostalgia, and the thoughts in tranquility. The last part ends the music with the travelling finally back home, and he has a new perspective and view towards the future.

Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. Thank Hank is Rock 70’s arrangement similar to what I experienced under the direction of Hank Levy while a grad student at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. It offers students an opportunity to explore the odd meters he commonly used to formulate many of his works, only on an easier level for advanced middle school and high school players. Audiences will also enjoy this diversion from the typical meters used in most jazz arrangements. Although scored for full jazz ensemble, the arrangement will work for smaller groups that do not have the full instrumentation. Auxiliary cow bell and tambourine parts will add to the flavor that was so commonly used during this era of pop music. Try to get the70’s flavor by using as close to an organ sound as possible, but a piano may be substituted. . There is 36 measure improvisation section that uses three chords, one for every 12 measures, and jazz scales are included in all the wind parts to encourage students to improvise.

The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers).
