If I Were a Bell is a song from the 1950 musical Guys and Dolls, based on Damon Runyan stories from Broadway in the prohibition era. Sky, the thirsty gambler, takes straight-laced Salvationist Sarah to Havana for a bet. They drink a local milkshake with sugar and a little native flavouringSarah: What's the name of the flavouring?Sky: Bacardi.Sarah: Doesn't Bacardi have alcohol in it?Sky: Oh, only enough to act as a preservative.Sarah: You know, this would be a wonderful way to get children to drink milk!After a couple of those, she bursts into song. Doris Day had a Top-20 hit with If I Were a Bell in 1950 and many singers have covered it since. Its place as a Jazz Standard was cemented in 1956 on the album Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet.This original arrangement for big band features a solo flute - if not a flute solo - and, at 128 BPM, is slightly slower than usual. It was written in the mid-1990s for the Morley College Jazz Orchestra in London (then directed by Gordon BAP! Rose and Pete Pearl and Dean Moore). The style is in the direction of the understated West-Coast sound (Count Basie/Bill Russo/Bill Holman), with tipsy soli sections and a shout-chorus. The part for second alto OR first tenor is the same, meaning the flautist can be either an alto or tenor player. Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing.Hic!

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955738). When my friend Werner told me to listen to Smooth Operator, I thought he meant the well-known mid-80s smooth jazz number by the British band Sade. Instead, I got a surprise. This Smooth Operator was totally different, totally unknown to me, and provoked me to find out about Dorothy Dandridge and her life. I encourage you to do so too.The album Smooth Operator was released in 1999. However, Dorothy Dandridge had recorded this song nearly 40 years earlier, in February 1961, with – according to the sleeve notes from Verve Records – an unknown orchestra and unknown producer. The arranger of the band charts is also not credited. It seems there was just one take, because when Ms. Dandridge enters at the pickup to measure 5, it takes the rhythm section a few beats to fall into line with her; one trumpet also enters too early in measure 74! Notwithstanding, this is an amazing, very cool number, and if your female vocalist feels up to the challenge of these cheeky, risqué lyrics, then these easy charts will enable your big band to recreate the piece.Although the style is dated and recalls a bygone era, I feel this song is a good way to remember this brilliant actress, singer, and dancer who died so young, and draw attention to the injustices she suffered and which are still with us today. The tagline to the film of her life starring Halle Berry sums up her life: Right woman. Right place. Wrong time.

Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Composed in the 1970s around the time of the American bicentennial celebration, the title also refers to meter changes between 7/4 (written as 4/4+3/4) and 6/4. Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. If you are looking for a change of pace for your concert or assessment program, this is an excellent choice!Grade: 3+Ranges:Trumpet: C6Trombone: G4 About George West: Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That. The song is based on Paul Keating's 1993 eulogy at the interment of the Unknown Soldier, one of Australia's most iconic speeches. Kernaghan said the song was inspired by Keating's immortal words, He is all of them. And he is one of us. This particular arrangement was premiered at a special concert commemorating that centenary of Armistice Day on 11 November 2018. The band accompaniment is fairly straight forward and not too demanding of the players. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement.
