I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

The song is based on Paul Keating's 1993 eulogy at the interment of the Unknown Soldier, one of Australia's most iconic speeches. Kernaghan said the song was inspired by Keating's immortal words, He is all of them. And he is one of us. This particular arrangement was premiered at a special concert commemorating that centenary of Armistice Day on 11 November 2018. The band accompaniment is fairly straight forward and not too demanding of the players. TRAFFIC JAM is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel. The arrangement of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic counterpoint. Solo space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto Sax and 1st Trombone. The solo sections may be opened up for players to take additional choruses if desired. A shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections, rhythmic shots and some fragmented melodic ideas that will require careful attention to execute accurately. Here's a fun big band composition inspired by the title phrase, Wackadoo! In most parts of the world, this phrase means someone who is crazy. However, in Australia it has a different usage, as an exclamantion indicating something fun and exciting, but typically delivered in an understated/unassuming way.This tune certainly has some funky wackiness, but is underpinned by down-home, old-timey (even corny!?) melodic material and a funky groove throughout. The saxophone section is featured extensively in the soli sections and with a solo section open for lead alto or tenor sax.Rhythm section parts have some complexity in some of the written parts, however have chord changes indicated throughout to enabling players to render their own groove if the written parts are too difficult.Hope you enjoy!

LAZY SUNDAY is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece (originally entitled CARNE ASADA) for the 2007 Prestige Music Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. This chart is a smooth Bossa Nova, inspired by the food and setting at a laid back BBQ session in a park in the heart of Palm Springs on a beautiful spring day. Work to develop a smooth ensemble sound and be careful to place rhythms accurately. Solo space is provided for the 1st Alto Sax, 4th Trumpet, and 1st Trombone players. The changes in the solo section are quite challenging and will need to be carefully prepared. All rhythm section parts are fully notated for younger players. Trumpet players will need harmon mutes and are required to double on Flugel. If flugelhorns are not available, have the trumpets play into the stand or use bucket mutes. Likewise, the Trombones require bucket mutes but may play in stand if these are not available. However, I don't think she would have a problem with this 1950's style jazz chart! This bluesy sounding chart in F is remeniscent of tunes from that time period. It is my sincere hope that your students will be inspired to listen to and learn the great music of that period after learning this tune.
