Denny Glasscock #6058077. Published by Denny Glasscock (A0.922044). The original public domain hymn has been modified to a Big Band style jazz piece. It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.

She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.

It was released as a single in January 1969 by Fantasy Records and on the band's second studio album, Bayou Country. The song became a major hit in the United States, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1969, the first of five singles to peak at No. 2 for the group. Another version by R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner, released on Liberty Records in 1971, did nearly as well as the original on the charts, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. They won a Grammy Award for their rendition in 1972. After the disbandment of the duo, Tina continued to perform the song during her solo career, and recorded new versions of it for her studio as well as live albums. Suspicious Package is a work for Jazz Band/Jazz combo composed by Cullen Smith, a local Bass player and Music Educator in Oklahoma City. Suspicious Package saw its first draft created in June, 2022. Cullen Smith wrote the original edition in less than an hour after seeing Snarky Puppy live at the Oklahoma City Tower Theater during the Summer of 2022. Cullen's first words after completing the first draft were That took a suspiciously short amount of time to write... and as a result Cullen came up with the name Suspicious Package because it just sounded cool and fitting with the attitude of the music he wrote.Later on, Cullen Smith would premier the Jazz combo version of Suspicious Package at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in November of 2022. Cullen Smith would give his Music Education String Bass Degree recital in March of 2023 where he performed Suspicious Package along with two other works called Suspicious Delivery and Suspicious Mixtape. Cullen Smith has gained some notability from his community about the piece Suspicious Package and has since been asked to share it online for people to purchase a copy. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. It's fast and plays best if counted in two because we have (2) transitions to 6/8 (march) and back again to 4/4 (swing). By counting in TWO the transition is easier because the downbeats remain the same.There are ad lib solos for the Tenor I Sax, Trombone II, Alto II, Trumpet II and Guitar. At the end we have a rallentando leading to (2) fermatas, the 1st long and the 2nd longer. This is a chance to feature the drummer with solo fills. Separate the fermatas with RR tracks, please. Following the latter fermata and RR tracks, the last 4 bars are back up to tempo!
