TRAFFIC JAM is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel. The arrangement of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic counterpoint. Solo space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto Sax and 1st Trombone. The solo sections may be opened up for players to take additional choruses if desired. A shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections, rhythmic shots and some fragmented melodic ideas that will require careful attention to execute accurately. We've taken Duke Ellington's classic riff composition and reharmonised it with a series of suspended chords (plus one major 7) so that's it not even a blues anymore. Great fun to play without being too technically challenging so you can add it to your set quickly and easily.

With a shuffle groove, the opening melody is stated by alto, tenor, trumpet and optional guitar in fourths. Some countermelody development, solo space (written) for tenor and trumpet, then an interlude that builds big time into a powerful shout chorus to bring it home. It's a happening chart. (4:04) This chart gives the New Orleans classic a funk treatment. The piece starts with a great introduction, and a vamp based on the melody follows each chorus. I had the opportunity to take a grand tour to the wonderful country of Brazil which I had always dreamed about. I can say it didn't disappoint. Before computers could imitate an orchestra well, I bought in Salvador many Brazilian instruments and carted them back home. This piece for jazz orchestra was the beginning of my personal renaissance as a composer, and here it is, all shiny and new and revised. The piece begins with a fast Samba, slows to mysterious calls of the rainforest, travels through Rio's bossa nova and ends with a bang. She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.

With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.

He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.
