Que Garota Linda is a high energy, very exciting, Brazilian-Latin style instrumental from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. The piano and flute interact, with the flute (performed by guest flutist Justo Almario) and piano trading sections of the main melody, and then providing dynamic background hooks and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, jazz improvisation, and high energy rhythm section playing. The API track featured Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums, with guest percussionist Alex Acuña of Weather Report, backing Mark Massey and Justo Almario. Que Garota Linda was also covered by jazz guitarist Charles Small, a dynamic version the style of Wes Montgomery, which can be heard here: https://youtu.be/wNS3m8rydEwABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators.

(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

The main objective of the chart is to teach basic swing concepts, along with simpler piano voicings and bass lines for your first year jazz students. Dah Duh Daht! is the literal articulation and rhythm translation of the main motif of the tune that is passed around the brass and saxophone sections.Dah Duh Daht! also uses a 12-bar basic blues form in the key of Bb, which also makes it a great chart to teach jazz improvisation and blues form. New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. Funk chart for the advanced jazz ensemble. A full ensemble hit starts off the chart which then builds, starting with just electric bass and drums, to the head stated by guitar and 2nd trumpet. Some backgrounds and independent bari sax lines fill up the 2nd time through the head. The solo section follows, after which a transitional section revolving around the altered scale launches the chart into a burning double time sax soli. Trombone and trumpet solis round out the chart. The saxes then take the melody for the out chorus, punctuated by brass stabs.
