If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

This piece was commissioned by Ralston Middle School, but with their permission, I also wanted to open source it for anyone else who wanted to play the tune. The bass line is a suggested one (it's a simple Bossa Nova line), but the other parts are just with slashes. Great for a middle school band looking to add more of a Latin sound to their set.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.JES171). 9 x 12 in inches.Boppin' at the Laundromat, a piece for Jazz Ensemble featuring Oboe and Tuba soloists, is a programmatic story. The first idea to come to mind was the dissonant chord (m. 16, m. 24, m. 32, etc.) intended to emulate a dryer buzzer. From there, a story began to take shape.An attractive gentleman (tuba) approaches the counter at his local laundromat (m. 17), looking to have some of his clothes washed. Soon after, an attractive lady (oboe) approaches the counter along with the man (m. 23), and they notice each other. The mutual attraction is palpable, illustrated with arpeggios in triplets in the piano and vibes (m. 33). Their clothes washing questions are resolved, and they take their seats, nearby each other, of course. The small talk begins.Just then, some noisier patrons enter (brass), completing the laundering atmosphere. A high trumpet lick (m. 61) is the ever present obnoxious laughter that always seems to have an outburst at the most inopportune time. The following solo section (m. 66) is a lull in the superficial conversation of the lady and gentleman, where each is left to their own thoughts.Suddenly (m. 78), the conversation begins anew, with a more personal and profound interaction between them. All the while, the other launderers continue their carrying on. At measure 121, the man's dryer finishes, followed soon after by the woman's (m. 122), and the pair go their separate ways. Their story to be completed in the mind of the listener.

Our arrangement convert the music into a medium level concert band setting, and add our own adjustments for some of the parts. For the instrumentation, this music contains most of the wind ensemble wind instruments, and string instrument such as violin and bass. This music is more for medium or high level bands that are looking forward to innovative and new style music.
