The trick in this chart is to keep the volume down form the first vocal entrance and allow excitement to build with each key change and have the volume build with the addition of different sections while encouraging the ensemble to not overblow. Rhythm section parts have been fully notated thorughout to assist younger players. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite. I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses! The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version. The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble. Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano. The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks. This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging. Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players. I hope you enjoy performing this chart!

Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

My energetic saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone),â€All In†is a jazz piece that was inspired by Jimmy Giuffre’s  “Four Brothers†and all of the other great big band arrangers.  From them I learned so much about writing for the saxophone quartet in particular block chording. Further I did not score it for 3 tenors (or 1 alto 2 tenors) and bari and did not use the chord changes to Jeepers Creepers. I did enjoy creating colorful counterpoint and harmonies and tried to keep it in a light style like the Four Brothers recording.  While I did not include any improvisation it could be added perhaps using the chords from Jeepers Creepers.  All of this should make for challenging but enjoyable playing.  Note: all parts and the score are transposed in one pdf file. trt: 2’ 24 “ this work is: copyright 2023davekenneymusic I would love to get comments from you.Be Well Dave Kenneydavekenneymusic@gmail.com

CLAIRE’S DILEMMA is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2004 Australian Academy Festival of Music A Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a lively, up-tempo number that gives the ensemble a good workout. Featuring a catchy melody and bop-style figures that will keep the sax and trumpet sections on their toes. The solo sections, loosely based on 'Rhythm changes, provide space for the 1st Trombone, 1st Tenor Sax, 1st Alto Sax and 2nd Trumpet players. While players should be encouraged to develop their own solos, written suggestions have been included on separate sheets and may be used to provide a starting point for less experienced improvisers. The chart features a dynamic, Basie-style shout chorus providing the perfect opportunity to show off a tight and exciting ensemble sound. Take care in the final 9 measures of the piece to make sure rhythms and shot notes are accurately placed. www.bemus.com

First, your saxes will spend some quality time together on these solos in unison, harmony and a cappella, but always swinging. Then, a powerhouse stop-time ensemble section for the brass and fun chord changes and nice kicks over this blues progression for the rhythm section will keep up the energy. This chart is titled in honor of the defunct premier jazz club on Long Island. Commissioned by the Nassau-Suffolk Jazz Band, composer Carl Strommen went all out with this swinger. Great chart!

Plenty of meter changes to keep things interesting; the writing may bring to mind some of the jazzier arrangements of the Canadian Brass, with a written walking tuba bassline. With the optional repeat, the chart weighs in at about three minutes, and could even be performed with both tuba and bass as the parts are virtually identical.
