(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!

Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. It sold over a million copies and is hailed as the unofficial Cape Cod Anthem and credited with putting the Cape on the map and establishing Cape Cod as a significant tourist destination. It has been recorded by many other artists and remains an enduring part of The Great American Songbook. My SATB arrangement of the song is a personal best seller for me. This is a funky straight up blues tune that I've had for a while. Built around a steady, mechanical riff laid out in the bass guitar and guitar, this work features plenty of soli playing throughout the different sections. The smeary main theme, introduced by alto and bari sax in unison, is later picked up by the rest of the section as well as the trumpets in the playout at the end. The saxophones in particular are strongly encouraged to make the most out of the bends, scoops and dips as indicated. There is an open solo chorus for a guitar solo. This tune has gone by many names in my mind over the years (Texas Trout, Rudie-Nudie Blues, I Think Your Dog Has Worms), but have at last settled on Blues Against The Machine for the main title, as I think this captures the contrast between the bluesy melody with the machine-like riff.

The first track on The Temptations in a Mellow Mood, an album released as a crossover to white audiences, this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein tune is a great example of The Temptations close harmony skills. This is an arrangement for Big Band with Solo Male Vocal and TTBB, playable by intermediate ensembles and transcribed note for note from the recording. Starting in a Latin style reminiscent of Manteca, this arrangement is mainly in a big band swing style and briefly transitions to a jazz waltz in the middle section. Due to the vocals being featured, the horns are used sparsely and there are few sections where extended rehearsal is needed. Although the album itself doesn't break down who arranged this initially, it more than likely is an Oliver Nelson creation. The Kevin Gilbert Estate, under the name GPP, serves as manager for all of Kevin's intellectual property and they have granted me permission to create this arrangement for jazz band and pursue its publication. Unlike the original dance-oriented track, I've reimagined Simpler Times as a medium tempo, straight 8th rock ballad featuring alto sax.

The ensemble enters with a stronger statement that builds to the head.The guitar plays the A section of the head in octave or single notes. The bridges section swings as a single eighth note guitar line. The background starts with the sax section followed with counterpoint between the trumpet and trombone sections.The second time through the form, Tenor Sax 1 solos over the first half changes and background. The guitar takes over solo on the last half of the form which leads into an echo of the intro and builds up to the shout chorus.The shout builds to a melodic trumpet high D followed by an obvious quotation by the ensemble. Repetition of the ensemble intro with a main theme fragment is followed by brass pyramids and a final theme stinger to close out the piece. 160 bpm per quarter note is a suggested tempo but the piece can be taken faster for more excitement and energy. The piece is written in 4/4 for the swing bridge section. The samba sections should be felt in 2/2 with the accent on the 2. The quarter note always stays the same.
