D’oh! is as much about word play as it is about the rhythmic melody that uses the solfeggio syllables “mi†and “do†to create a clever musical pun and a tongue-in-cheek expression that reflects a disgruntled response to a sharp and accusative question.  Molded to the swing era this work echoes the style of Glenn Miller as it highlights the good-natured jazzy banter between these musical syllables, emphasizing the different features inherent in each section of the ensemble at different times in the music.  With its compelling momentum, Me? D’oh! is a snappy and light-hearted jazz piece that affords a great opportunity for young ensembles to play more individualized parts and build confidence in playing in the style of the great swing era bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

Here is a tune in that genre, with the fluegelhorn as the main voice for both the melody and the solo. The alto saxophone has a short solo, and the saxophone section has a segment of the melody as a soli. Fm6 and Gm6 in the A section alternate with E Maj7, D Maj7, and C Maj7 at the bridge to create some nicely contrasting colors and feelings. As always with GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble music, SampleSolos are provided for each soloist. Chord symbols AND written-out voicings are provided for ALL the piano parts in the GEJES book.The rhythm section Uni-Part can be played by an optional guitar, piano, bass, and even the drums! Solo sections are broken up such that one player does the A-A, and another doe the B section and the final A. Sorry, no SampleSolo for the trumpet, but all others have one. The music is a riff on Am-Bb7, with a modal bridge that uses the parallel and relative majors of A minor. A nice little structural element! Rhythm section Uni-Part, Straight-through no D.S. al coda layout, and piano voicings and chord symbols make this as playable and clear for student, recreational, and pro ensembles. Ranges are conservative without being boring. Running time is approx. 4 mins 45 secs. MBB.

Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Composed in the 1970s around the time of the American bicentennial celebration, the title also refers to meter changes between 7/4 (written as 4/4+3/4) and 6/4. Your soloists only need to know two scales to solo on this tune: C dorian minor and Ab mixolydian. Range and technical demands are moderate. After the statement of the melody, an open solo section leads to a sax soli, then a great shout chorus. If you are looking for a change of pace for your concert or assessment program, this is an excellent choice!Grade: 3+Ranges:Trumpet: C6Trombone: G4 About George West: Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.
