After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. D’oh! is as much about word play as it is about the rhythmic melody that uses the solfeggio syllables “mi†and “do†to create a clever musical pun and a tongue-in-cheek expression that reflects a disgruntled response to a sharp and accusative question.  Molded to the swing era this work echoes the style of Glenn Miller as it highlights the good-natured jazzy banter between these musical syllables, emphasizing the different features inherent in each section of the ensemble at different times in the music.  With its compelling momentum, Me? D’oh! is a snappy and light-hearted jazz piece that affords a great opportunity for young ensembles to play more individualized parts and build confidence in playing in the style of the great swing era bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

It was premiered November 5th, 2019 at UNC's University Center. This chart features alto, tenor, and bass solos throughout the chart as well as acapella sax and brass sections as well. Rooftop accents are meant to be kept fat and unclipped. It is important to keep musical momentum in acapella sections, as to keep the time with a lack of rhythm section. It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”. PERFORMANCE NOTESSurrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect. The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos. The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments. The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.I hope you have fun with this classic tune!

Gene Wilder’s 1971 performance of this song in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory won the hearts of boys and girls dreaming of endless worlds of candy and fantasy. Gerhard Guter’s swinging jazz waltz rendition for big band with solo alto or bass vocalist breathes new life into this beloved tune. The introduction sets up a repeating harmonic pattern, which returns at various points during the arrangement, which gradually picks up steam and swing, unfolding in a lush cadence as the vocalist launches into the poignant lyric. Saxophone writing draws upon the usage of trills, across-the-barline quadruplets, and harmonized flourishes. Unison piano and (optional) vibraphone parts will bring to mind the musical code for entering Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Room. The orchestration benefits from a variety of dynamic shadings and the use of bucket mutes for the trombones and cup mutes for the trumpets. Dramatic moments are emphasized with mallets. Solo changes are provided for scat vocal, vibes, guitar, and piano. Vocal (alto or bass), Five saxes (2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari), eight brass, piano/bass/drums, and optional guitar and vibraphone.
