Published by Des Press (A0.1077216). Kids' Song is an original piece for big band, composed and arranged by Des McNutty. The saxophone section needs flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, with only one alto and one tenor sax. The solo trumpet part is quite easy, spanning one octave; f-f'. The written-out jazz solo is not as difficult as it looks but nevertheless a bit more challenging. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to someone else. The level is on the easier side of intermediate. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. Kids' Song was conceived as part of the obscure musical about the fortunes of a banjo-playing flapper from Burnley, Fifi Braithwaite, but dropped for stylistic reasons because the show was set in the late 1920s/ early 1930s. The sentiment is We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?.

HONKIN’ HORNS by Joe Procopio HONKIN’ HORNS is an exclusive solo for two saxophones based on the shuffle beat - known as the Shag down South. It is exciting Dance Music with a swing feel and was extremely popular in the Fifties. The Shag is still popular in the Carolinas and remains the State Dance for South Carolina. HONKIN’ HORNS has the sound literally of two saxophones honking wonderfully together - almost wildly. There are very few saxophone solos for two saxophones that are as much fun as HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYIN’ SAXES. They offer great listening pleasure and are a delight to play. People love to dance to this music. Speaking from personal experience, I have never found any saxophone music that gives more pleasure to playing, listening and dancing than HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYING’ SAXES. The music here is written for Two Alto Saxophones or for Alto and Tenor Saxophone with a small quartet Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums. Pilbot’s Revenge is written for Big Band, with solo sections for trombone, saxes and trumpet. Each horn section is featured at times during the piece and there is an open improvisation section for the full band.The theme is centred around a 9 note motive and is set over a diminished 7th chord progression. Starting off in a funk style, driven by the bass, the piece moves into a half-time feel featuring a wailing alto sax and saxophone section feature, moving into an energetic samba that descends into chaos, before a driving swing style finishes the piece off.Originally composed for the Kool Skools album competition during my time at Blackburn High School, this piece was given new life and three more movements during a recording project by the Blackburn Big Band, made up of alumni of the HS.
