This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. This is the traditional baseball theme (Take Me Out to the Ballgame) set in an energetic jazz band swing chart. After a brief intro to lay it down, the melody starts in a lazy swing tempo with a lilting alto solo (a-la street player in front of the park) and soon builds to a full ensemble shout then a lively up-tempo accentuated by energetic interjections. There is an open solo section before the head is repeated with a typical Tin-Pan-Alley ending. Logical rehearsal marks and generous technique items make rehearsal a snap! Ossia notes (lead trumpet) are included for developing / younger artists. This is a super-duper exciting and moderately challenging chart which really showcases your band and the jazz band at its very finest. Muted trumpets are then accompanied by the trombones and sax. The short bridge is led by the saxophones before the trombones restate the theme. The middle section is open for solos with backing to be played second time only. Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That. A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. In regards to the piano loop, while I have provided a transcription of what I played in the track, you are free to use this as inspiration to create your own.Performance time - 3 minIf you happen to record or film this piece, feel free to tag #JLTStudio ... Published by George Willson (A0.1242133). The Center Of The Universe is a a landmark in downtown Tulsa that is a bit of broken pavement on a bridge across some railroad tracks. Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction. To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety. Yes, others have done it, but this adds another entry to that very short list of big bands tunes in 5 to make us think of that weird spot downtown where sound just doesn't behave the way it seems like it should.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.

It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.
