Chism, Sr. (A0.1258485). Aria's Blues is a fun big band F Blues chart written in honor of my firstborn. The chart opens with a piano solo for the first twelve (12) bars. The Trumpet Section takes the lead after the opening piano solo. The B section introduces the Saxophone and Trombone Sections supporting the Trumpets' lead with backgrounds. The C section brings a killer Saxophone soli before the solo section. The D section is an open solo section for the Saxophone section and can be repeated multiple times. The E and F sections bring in a (E) Trumpet soli and Trombone soli (F) as backgrounds while the Saxophonists are trading 8s until the last four measures of the F section, and they all will play the changes.The G section is a tutti for the ensemble as the rhythm section continues to play the changes with the last measures of the drummer setting up the conclusion to end the piece.

I wrote this chart for the Madison County (GA) Middle School Jazz Band a couple of years ago and named it after the river that I would cross each morning as I entered that county on my way to the school from home. All rhythm section parts are fully notated in this chart, but these serve as suggestions and tools for building improvisation and comping skills. The same can be said for the written solos for tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone. Each solo section can easily be opened / extended for improvisation. Dah Duh Daht! is the literal articulation and rhythm translation of the main motif of the tune that is passed around the brass and saxophone sections.Dah Duh Daht! also uses a 12-bar basic blues form in the key of Bb, which also makes it a great chart to teach jazz improvisation and blues form. With all the bird titles floating around out there from Birdland, Lullaby of Birdland, Yardbird, Foo Birds, Free Bird, and even The Chicken, I figured what with my being from Broken Arrow (the home of the annual Rooster Days festival), it was high time there was a song involving the rooster. Called Night of the Rooster, this was a cross between the Stray Cat Strut and James Bond, and one can only imagine the rooster's evening in the hen house. Without going into innuendos, the way the T-Town Jazz Band performed it was with all trombone improv solos ending with all four of us playing at once. Whether this was measuring slide lengths or a battle between roosters, you can let your imagination run wild. It boiled down to a fun ltitle blues piece that wasn't too difficult to get into in any case, and we even have the recording linked to prove it.George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.MP3 rendition is an extract of the composition program.

FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring.
