There are parts for 5 saxophones (although the arrangement can be played with just 1 alto, 1 tenor, and baritone), 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, acoustic guitar, keyboard strings, electric bass, drum set, and finger cymbals. One of your redundant big band players could maybe be recruited to play the essential finger cymbals part. The arrangement requires some finger dexterity from your saxophone players, particularly the altos, but all those passages are doubled in the keyboard strings part. The keyboard part could serve as a basis for writing out your own string parts, which would be a wonderful opportunity to get your local string players involved.

The Guru was written for Soundscape Jazz Big Band and recorded in São Paulo, Brazil. It is a guitar feature honoring Djalma Lima who is an amazing guitarist and who had a crew cut at that time making him look like a guru! It is based on Monk Changes, although not exactly the same (remembering: Well you Needn´t). It has some tempo changes and some ensemble passages. The changes are fun to blow over.

Blues for Elisa is a show tune that will work good as an opener or Encore. The form is irregular starting with the constant F minor swing that is interrupted almost randomly by the Bb7+11 bridge. The rhythm section must stay on it´s toes to make the changes at the right time. Each of the solos is of varying lengths making for alot of surprises (for the audience…not the band hopefully). There are ensemble passages and a 5 sax soli making it a challenging, but highly effective chart!Solos – Guitar, Alto 2, Trumpet 3 and Trombone 3.

This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone. Tannenbaum, Replanted is a complete reworking of the very popular Weihnachtslied O Tannenbaum, which will even be familiar to many people from non-German-speaking countries. However, this is not an arrangement for purists, as the well-known melody in 3/4 time is presented here in a reharmonized up-tempo 4/4 time. The piece starts with a gently driving Latin-style groove and transforms to a Swing middle section, returning to the Latin groove at the end. I’ve not used a standard Latin beat here, instead a groove based loosely on the bossa nova. All the accompanying motifs in the saxes, trumpets, and trombones are drawn from the original melody.The Outro requires your lead alto and tenor saxophone players to improvise, alternating every two measures. I’ve left it up to the players to decide who starts first. Likewise, one or both players can improvise over the final chord.The flute part is optional, but does add a very distinctive sound over the top of the band, particularly in the quieter passages.

Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.
