Running time: approximately 4:30Your Love is a beautiful ballad composed by the late Louis Burke, a Los Angeles based trumpeter and band leader. Louis came to me and said that he had this love song melody he had composed, and could I write an arrangement of it for his big band. I reharmonized it and made it into an alto sax solo.The first chorus is mostly sax solo, backed by some subtle brass and flute accompaniment. The second chorus starts with 16 bars of sax improvisation, followed by some ensemble work by the trumpets and trombones playing contrapuntally. The chorus ends by passing the contrapuntal baton to the sax section. The whole arrangement comes to a climax in the next eight bars and ends on a romantic note with a restatement of the melody by the alto sax.Medium slow ballad (quarter=76).Brass parts are moderately high. The lead trumpet has several high Ds, and one high E. The contrapuntal writing requires a high degree of independence from the musicians.

Originally written by Grammy award winner Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Tuesday Night Music Club, and the solo records Thud, and Shaming of the True), Simpler Times was part of an unreleased collection of 1985 recordings by Kevin under the title Decent Exposure. During a period when Kevin was going by the name of Kai Gilbert he wrote, produced, and played all the instruments on three separate albums that have recently been formally released as part of the boxed set Call Me Kai. Kevin was a music student of mine at Serra high School in San Mateo, CA (yes, the same high school attended by Tom Brady) and remained a dear friend until his untimely passing in 1996 at the young age of 29. The Kevin Gilbert Estate, under the name GPP, serves as manager for all of Kevin's intellectual property and they have granted me permission to create this arrangement for jazz band and pursue its publication. Unlike the original dance-oriented track, I've reimagined Simpler Times as a medium tempo, straight 8th rock ballad featuring alto sax.

After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.

Grade 3.Ranges:Trumpet: B5Trombone: A4About George West:Trombonist and educator George West (1931-2013) was founder and head of the jazz program at James Madison University for 25 years, from 1971 until his retirement in 1996. He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.
