Running time: approximately 4:30Your Love is a beautiful ballad composed by the late Louis Burke, a Los Angeles based trumpeter and band leader. Louis came to me and said that he had this love song melody he had composed, and could I write an arrangement of it for his big band. I reharmonized it and made it into an alto sax solo.The first chorus is mostly sax solo, backed by some subtle brass and flute accompaniment. The second chorus starts with 16 bars of sax improvisation, followed by some ensemble work by the trumpets and trombones playing contrapuntally. The chorus ends by passing the contrapuntal baton to the sax section. The whole arrangement comes to a climax in the next eight bars and ends on a romantic note with a restatement of the melody by the alto sax.Medium slow ballad (quarter=76).Brass parts are moderately high. The lead trumpet has several high Ds, and one high E. The contrapuntal writing requires a high degree of independence from the musicians.

The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired. GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series titles feature SampleSolos for most improvisational sections, so your band can learn to play the section material AND blow on changes at the same time. Each soloist's part is included without the sample as well, for the experienced player. All charts are straight through, with no D.S.'s back to the top or awkward pageturns. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862507). Here is a blues in C minor, a staple of jazz groups both large and small. This chart has several unusual aspects, all set within this familiar format. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

Each of the scales required for the improvisers is a melodic minor-derived scale, giving the whole piece an air of both openness, with the wide melodic intervals, and also a darker color, with those chords and scales in play. There are SampleSolos for the piano and 4th trumpet. Changes are included for an additional trombone solo, if desired, no sample provided. The main statement segues directly into a mixed soli that alternates tutti and mixed soli sections. Then, it's on to the blowing choruses, each with the background. No soloists will be required to play in the background, so everyone stays fresh. The melody returns, in a layered and stretto sort of way, with the final theme's second half returning to the altered voicings that are so characteristic the piece. Approx running time is one minute per chorus. Audio clip is just the piano solo, with backgrounds, so as to be able to hear those backgrounds clearly. Ranges are conservative, high and low. Rhythm section Uni-Part for bass, optional guitar, and even piano and drums if you wish, for simplicity's sake. All parts are two pages, rhythm section are three. MBB.

This arrangement for Jazz Ensemble / Big Band has written backing vocals with optional doubling in saxes (trumpets). The 'piano'-part is written for a synthesizer witch ideally should be set up by two different sounds, one for the left hand chords and another for the right hand lead part. I recomend you listen to the recording for more inspiration regarding this synthesizer sounds. The iconic lead synthesizer part is also written as a solo-like muted 2. trumpet. This part can easily be excluded if you perfers a solo synthesizer instead.The arrangement has a very basic written drum part, but listening to the recording, you'll hear that the drummer plays very freely on the hi-hat. The arrangement has no percussion part, but adding a percussionist playing freely on triangle, cow bells, woodblocks etc., will add valuable contribution to the final result.
