The chart features the trumpet section and brass are written in a comfortable range. 1st Trumpet requires F6 and there is a scream part (a la Derek Watkins) for a couple of bars, although these could be played down the octave. This is a mid 80's smooth jazz-pop chart with a bit of an edge, especially in the harmonies. Solo changes are in the alto sax 1, tenor sax 1, trumpet 2 and trombone 1. Since Russ Freeman (the composer of this work) is a master guitarist, a screamin' guitar solo would be totally appropriate! The keyboard can be played on a standard piano, or to make it more 80's, a DX7 style tine piano would work as well. This chart can add a touch of elegance with some 80's attitude to your next jazz band concert.

Originally released on Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic and later remade adding Run DMC, Walk This Way is a bonafide rock and roll classic. This arrangement is to be played with all the Aerosmith swagger possible with a big band. Solo section is open with changes in AS1, TS1, Tpt2 & Tbn1. Obviously, a screamin' guitar solo would be totally appropriate. The key signature is neutral, with accidentals placed as needed. This chart will give any jazz band concert some serious attitude!

It’ funky 2 beat and make you want to clap your hands on 2 & 4. Fun to play, younger players can do it and learn. It usually works to have the horn players that are not playing in the first part of the chat clap their hands over their head on 2 and 4. This will get the people into it. This is a simple funky 2 beat and should be kept that way. Piano has dissonant afterbeats--should be soft.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. Appropriate for a working band or a good high school or college band. Dedicated to Randy Brooks. This is a funky 2 beat built on double (24 bar) blues. It has an optional vocal,( cued in for alto sax) that should be sung thru a megaphone like the old Winchester Cathedral. The title comes from a pattern of speech found only in Chicago where people still say over by here and over by there. It swings well and invites a couple tambourines playing on 2 and 4. This is a fun chart but is very correct musically even if you expect the Blues Brothers to show up when it’s played. It can be opened for solos if needed. Don’t get too serious about the vocal, it’s best with your worst singer, maybe with a clothes-pin on his nose. Enjoy it with your audience.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This is an alto sax feature ballad. The melody is full and rich and could make you think of Johnny Hodges. First bridge is alto 1 & 2 in unison...with solo alto out front and alto 2 in section it gets a nice echo effect--Last 8 back to alto 1 solo. First half of second chorus has a band within a band over background. Solo part has a few notes past an eighth.Last bridge trombones then alto solo last 8. Ending is very dramatic with some interesting alto work..the very last note is held over the band....like Harlem Nocturne. Not too fast.Don’t let the last note scare you, look at your fingering chart or play it 8va lower. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. The answer is, of course, louder, faster, and higher, or otherwise stated, obnoxiously. Such was born this unique version of this piece, with screaming trumpet parts, but a trombone soloing the first verse and then taking an extended improvisional solo throughout the middle (because as the lead trombone player of the band, I opted to give it to myself). I, personally, like this version better than the one that mimics the original, and give a little Bond pep to the midst to your setlist.
