Fanfare (for 4 or 5 wind instruments and rhythm section) was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. Suggested assignment of parts for a big band: I -- 4 trumpets (open); II -- clarinet, soprano sax; III - alto sax, trombone (open); IV - tenor sax, trombone (cup), trombone (bucket); V - baritone sax, bass trombone (open). Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.

Trombone / Bass Trombone / Piano / Guitar / Bass & Drums. Even if the individual parts give the impression of a simple arrangement at first glance, one should not underestimate the sometimes challenging tuning due to the more complex chord progressions and their clusters. In addition, each individual player has to master her/his sheet quite soft (mp) throughout the entire piece - with the exception of a short passage. If these elementary details are observed, this nice tune is a treat for the audience as well for each player.

Sleepy Creek Samba (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is a bright and happy piece. This samba has an unusual structure. The theme is 18 bars. Importantly, the last 2 bars are intended to sound unresolved, with the ascending major 7th chords, and be a springboard for the soloist. Solos are based on this 18-bar form. After the solos and an ensemble soli (note its use of space), a second theme emerges. This theme has a 12-bar form, with two 6-bar phrases. It merges with 16 bars of the first theme. Finally, a short tag takes the tune out with a surprise ending. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Suspicious Package is a work for Jazz Band/Jazz combo composed by Cullen Smith, a local Bass player and Music Educator in Oklahoma City. Suspicious Package saw its first draft created in June, 2022. Cullen Smith wrote the original edition in less than an hour after seeing Snarky Puppy live at the Oklahoma City Tower Theater during the Summer of 2022. Cullen's first words after completing the first draft were That took a suspiciously short amount of time to write... and as a result Cullen came up with the name Suspicious Package because it just sounded cool and fitting with the attitude of the music he wrote.Later on, Cullen Smith would premier the Jazz combo version of Suspicious Package at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in November of 2022. Cullen Smith would give his Music Education String Bass Degree recital in March of 2023 where he performed Suspicious Package along with two other works called Suspicious Delivery and Suspicious Mixtape. Cullen Smith has gained some notability from his community about the piece Suspicious Package and has since been asked to share it online for people to purchase a copy. Chick Corea recorded Samba Song on his 1978 Friends album with saxophonist Joe Farrell, bassist Eddie Gómez, and drummer Steve Gadd. Woody Herman recorded a fantastic John Fedchock arrangment of Samba Song on his 1987 Woody's Gold Star album that unfortunately was never published.This challenging Fedchock-inspired arrangement features a sax soli, followed by two solo sections that can spotlight any instruments, and ends with an in-tempo drum solo. Any of the solo sections can be cut or extended as desired to make the piece as short or long as desired. True to the original Corea version, a 6-bar hemiola section toward the beginning will keep everyone on their toes. The top lead trumpet note is a written E6.
