This is a slow start in the morning sort of blues, meant to be played like the coffee hasn't quite kicked in. It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.

As a 80s kid, I grew up watching Burt Reynolds movies and this one is one of the best! Jerry Reed and Dick Feller wrote a fantastic theme song and it translates great for jazz band. The gang vocals toward the end can be replaced by a drum solo if anyone's not into that kind of thing. The key signature is neutral with accidentals placed as needed. Plenty of solo space for anyone wanting to explore their inner redneck. Have fun and don't take it too seriously!

Published by George Willson (A0.1242133). The Center Of The Universe is a a landmark in downtown Tulsa that is a bit of broken pavement on a bridge across some railroad tracks. Where its name comes from is the unusual acoustic properties that one experiences when standing on top of that broken pavement. Those outside the circle can't hear what the person is saying, and when speaking, the person in the circle can hear their voice echoed back to them. Scientifically, it is said to be its unique position in relation to the nearby buildings of downtown, but even so, it has become a strange tourist attraction. To exemplify these strange acoustic properties, this big band piece is written in an unusual time signature for the blues: 5/4. That, in itself, makes it inherently difficult to play since most jazz musicians are tuned into 4/4 with the occasional 3/4 or 12/8 thrown in for variety.
