Alone With You - from the CD SAZZUNK, opens with a sensitive musical conversation with piano and bass then the trumpet joins the not so alone party. On the re-statement of the melody the full band enters along side the sax section harmonizing the melody with the solo trumpet supported and followed by the trombone, trumpets and sax section adding accents and lines that set up a hard driving swinging style for the trumpet solo. This all leads into the sax section taking it alone on a journey of its own. The trumpet solo rejoins the fun with the sax section restating the line and they all leave the room with a little piece of the action. The trumpet Solo per the CD is transcribed.

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is a 1931 Duke Ellington composition now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra on February 2, 1932. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time. Probably the first song to use the phrase swing in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the swing era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continually over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955738). When my friend Werner told me to listen to Smooth Operator, I thought he meant the well-known mid-80s smooth jazz number by the British band Sade. Instead, I got a surprise. This Smooth Operator was totally different, totally unknown to me, and provoked me to find out about Dorothy Dandridge and her life. I encourage you to do so too.The album Smooth Operator was released in 1999. However, Dorothy Dandridge had recorded this song nearly 40 years earlier, in February 1961, with – according to the sleeve notes from Verve Records – an unknown orchestra and unknown producer. The arranger of the band charts is also not credited. It seems there was just one take, because when Ms. Dandridge enters at the pickup to measure 5, it takes the rhythm section a few beats to fall into line with her; one trumpet also enters too early in measure 74! Notwithstanding, this is an amazing, very cool number, and if your female vocalist feels up to the challenge of these cheeky, risqué lyrics, then these easy charts will enable your big band to recreate the piece.Although the style is dated and recalls a bygone era, I feel this song is a good way to remember this brilliant actress, singer, and dancer who died so young, and draw attention to the injustices she suffered and which are still with us today. The tagline to the film of her life starring Halle Berry sums up her life: Right woman. Right place. Wrong time.

This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

Novo Brasileiro was originally recorded on the CD - Todd Murphy and Bandazul (The recording that is posted here) which has 6 horns. It is a Brazilian style Bossa Nova and it has been expanded into Big Band format. There is some doubling in the sax section so you need 3 flutes (Alto 2, Tenor 2 and Bari). The flutes are in unison so you could do it with one although you would probable need a microphone to balance the whole band. There are two solos: Tenor Sax and Guitar. It is written in slow 2 instead of fast 4 which is the Brazilian tradition for Samba and Bossa Nova. A real crowd pleaser!

Each of the scales required for the improvisers is a melodic minor-derived scale, giving the whole piece an air of both openness, with the wide melodic intervals, and also a darker color, with those chords and scales in play. There are SampleSolos for the piano and 4th trumpet. Changes are included for an additional trombone solo, if desired, no sample provided. The main statement segues directly into a mixed soli that alternates tutti and mixed soli sections. Then, it's on to the blowing choruses, each with the background. No soloists will be required to play in the background, so everyone stays fresh. The melody returns, in a layered and stretto sort of way, with the final theme's second half returning to the altered voicings that are so characteristic the piece. Approx running time is one minute per chorus. Audio clip is just the piano solo, with backgrounds, so as to be able to hear those backgrounds clearly. Ranges are conservative, high and low. Rhythm section Uni-Part for bass, optional guitar, and even piano and drums if you wish, for simplicity's sake. All parts are two pages, rhythm section are three. MBB.
