This composition is mostly in d minor with the theme carried in unison by the saxes. A nice contrapuntal line accompanies them played by the trombones. The Brass take over at the bridge. Saxes and brass give and take until the whole ensemble sends the tenor sax off in a solo section. The piece builds throughout with a big coda ending by the whole group. Great as a closer to your concert! Modern harmonies with hip jazz syncopation make this a winner!

Here's a show chart of mine which can sometimes being saved for Christmas but I believe is suitable all year long.The tricky things to remember for the band is 1) the intro should be counted in ONE because of the syncopation,2) the chart has 4 bars in the early third with a 4/4 feel, even though we never leave the 3/4 tempo marking and 3) the ending is a slow and deliberate contrast to this jazz waltz. Getting into this sow tempo requires RR tracks.

In English, the word Jam means when players perform their solos on a Chart. The idea Manny has created here is a Percussion Jam featuring any of the Afro-Cuban Percussion instruments. Manny picked the Timbales as a guide by performing Afro-Cuban Ad-Lib rhythms. For a novice in Afro-Cuban Music, this written solo would give you plenty of ideas to work with. You can either do the written solo or create one of your own. You must remember that Afro-Cuban Drumming is based heavily on syncopation so, soloing as if you were playing a drumset won't work here. The solo can be shared not only by the Timbales but also by the Congas and Bongo Player. The chart is rich with ostinato breaks of the percussion that tie the phrase of the melody with the song. The breaks must be played as written but if the section creates a break of its own, that will work too. The only requirement is the number of bars for each break must match the chart.

The word Jam in English means when players perform their solos in a Chart. The idea Manny has created here is a Percussion Jam featuring any of the Afro-Cuban Percussion instruments. Manny picked the Timbales as a guide by performing Afro-Cuban Ad-Lib rhythms. For a novice in Afro-Cuban Music, this written solo would give you plenty of ideas to work with. You can either do the written solo or create one of your own. You must remember that Afro-Cuban Drumming is based heavily on syncopation so, soloing as if you were playing a drumset won't work here. The solo can be shared not only by the Timbales but also by the Congas and Bongo Player. The chart is rich with ostinato breaks of the percussion that tie the phrase of the melody with the song. The breaks must be played as written but if the section creates a break of its own, that will work too. The only requirement is the number of bars for each break must match the chart.

Heading Home is a new, easy swing number for junior big band. This was originally a song and so essentially has a verse-refrain form. All the sections have something to do and there are short solos for the lead players. A tempo range is suggested so that bands with different abilities will be able to attempt this piece.Following the intro, which uses the refrain, the main theme is stated by unison saxes. The brass enter in the continuation of the main theme, with the saxes now in harmony. Unison trumpets then play the refrain and that is followed by the first solo section, which is cued in the lead alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone parts as well as the optional flute. A solo is suggested but the chords are included so that players can try out their own ideas. This section is followed by a brief bridge passage played by the trombones and lower saxes. After that we hear the second part of the main theme again, which is followed by unison trumpets playing the refrain and another short solo section. At the change of key, the trombones and lower saxes take over the main theme at first. Following the final refrain, the outro with its walking bass, cross-stick now added to the rhythm, and syncopated accompaniment beneath a sax or flute solo ensures that this piece really is heading home, although it concludes on a quiet note.The actual notes of these charts are easy, but this piece still demands full concentration and that tight playing so crucial to the big band sound. Unison passages will test intonation. For players new to swing, I hope it will help them to become familiar with this style of music.
