After a brief intro to lay it down, the melody starts in a lazy swing tempo with a lilting alto solo (a-la street player in front of the park) and soon builds to a full ensemble shout then a lively up-tempo accentuated by energetic interjections. There is an open solo section before the head is repeated with a typical Tin-Pan-Alley ending. Logical rehearsal marks and generous technique items make rehearsal a snap! Ossia notes (lead trumpet) are included for developing / younger artists. This is a super-duper exciting and moderately challenging chart which really showcases your band and the jazz band at its very finest. Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. ðŸ˜.

Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955738). When my friend Werner told me to listen to Smooth Operator, I thought he meant the well-known mid-80s smooth jazz number by the British band Sade. Instead, I got a surprise. This Smooth Operator was totally different, totally unknown to me, and provoked me to find out about Dorothy Dandridge and her life. I encourage you to do so too.The album Smooth Operator was released in 1999. However, Dorothy Dandridge had recorded this song nearly 40 years earlier, in February 1961, with – according to the sleeve notes from Verve Records – an unknown orchestra and unknown producer. The arranger of the band charts is also not credited. It seems there was just one take, because when Ms. Dandridge enters at the pickup to measure 5, it takes the rhythm section a few beats to fall into line with her; one trumpet also enters too early in measure 74! Notwithstanding, this is an amazing, very cool number, and if your female vocalist feels up to the challenge of these cheeky, risqué lyrics, then these easy charts will enable your big band to recreate the piece.Although the style is dated and recalls a bygone era, I feel this song is a good way to remember this brilliant actress, singer, and dancer who died so young, and draw attention to the injustices she suffered and which are still with us today. The tagline to the film of her life starring Halle Berry sums up her life: Right woman. Right place. Wrong time.

FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring. Eastern Neck Island is a contemporary lullaby. Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a magical place in Maryland. Located at the mouth of the Chester River as it enters the Chesapeake Bay, Eastern Neck Island is a wintering habitat for thousands of waterfowl (including the tundra swan) that migrate each year to the Bay. During a visit to the island I experienced a sense of maternal protection extending over the woods and marshes. This feeling inspired me to write a lullaby. It was originally in a traditional style. However, I decided to take the music in a different direction. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.
