Transport your audience back to the psychedelic, hippiest Age of Aquarius with this Jazz Band original by Bob Marshall. Reminiscent of Woody Herman's The Herd, Don Ellis Big Band, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band and others, Marshall perfectly captures the style and drive of those bands in that era with The Dream Maker. After a rhythmic, full ensemble intro, the piece settles into a fluid melody featuring Flugelhorn (a la Chuck Mangione). The melody restates with a soli of 2 trumpets and 2 trombones before going into a driving soprano sax lead section soli. But wait, it's not over yet: the ensemble breaks down to just the rhythm section in unison. Adding sections one at a time the chart continues to build to a roaring climax before a D.S. that features a wailing tenor sax solo. Restating the melody once more and a big outro The Dream Maker ends the journey and all is well! Written for a standard 17-piece jazz ensemble: 5 saxes (Tenor 1 doubling Soprano Sax), 4 trumpets (2nd doubling Flugelhorn), 4 trombones, guitar (acoustic), electric bass, piano, drums. Key of Ab.

A mysterious, exciting, and magical journey from a desolate earth to a dying star, this is Nebula. I wrote this piece in January 2023 for the Essentially Ellington Composition Contest, and five sets of revisions later I believe it is fully polished! The story I imagine first depicts a withering man stumbling through a dystopian landscape, but one that is filled with hope when looking to the stars. Then it transitions to a young kid traveling through space, and eventually they arrive at the star. They are first astounded by its presence, but then can't help but sit in the silence that surrounds them. However, in these moments of reflection, the star suddenly explodes, forming a Nebula.

New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. The 2 clarinet-2 tenor sax style is that used by The Glenn Miller Orchestra on Sunrise Serenade and other hit recordings. Original instrumental recordings of Twilight Time included those made respectively by the Three Suns[ (1944) and Les Brown & His Band of Renown (1945). Les Brown's version of Twilight Time was recorded in November 1944 and released in early 1945 as the B-side of Sentimental Journey, the first recording of that song. While the A-side featured Doris Day's vocals, Twilight Time was an instrumental. The Platters had a top 10 recording of it in 1960.
