HONKIN’ HORNS by Joe Procopio HONKIN’ HORNS is an exclusive solo for two saxophones based on the shuffle beat - known as the Shag down South. It is exciting Dance Music with a swing feel and was extremely popular in the Fifties. The Shag is still popular in the Carolinas and remains the State Dance for South Carolina. HONKIN’ HORNS has the sound literally of two saxophones honking wonderfully together - almost wildly. There are very few saxophone solos for two saxophones that are as much fun as HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYIN’ SAXES. They offer great listening pleasure and are a delight to play. People love to dance to this music. Speaking from personal experience, I have never found any saxophone music that gives more pleasure to playing, listening and dancing than HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYING’ SAXES. The music here is written for Two Alto Saxophones or for Alto and Tenor Saxophone with a small quartet Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums. If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

It does sound different using saxophones but have included parts for Brass Sextet. It is transcribed with Rhythm section parts for those that find it difficult to read chords or improvise/comp. In the arrangement, I have added the parts for the Vocal Lead to be played by various instrumentalists you might want to feature such as Alto Sax Lead with Tenor Sax backings, Tenor Lead and Tenor Sax Backings, Clarinet Lead. There is the opportunity to add multiple percussionists in addition to the drumkit. It was a fun song to arrange and the band really love playing this song with the Latin Vibe.
