Until The Real Thing Comes Along is a smooth ballad which was used as the theme song for Andy Kirk & His Nine Clouds of Joy - one of the most popular bands from Harlem's Savoy Ballroom. Arranger Van Alexander recorded this version on a classic Capitol LP The Home of Happy Feet in tribute to the ballroom. This is an accurate transcription of that arrangement. It features Tenor Sax lead, muted trumpet solo, trombone solo and is an excellent dance arrangement. .

A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. In regards to the piano loop, while I have provided a transcription of what I played in the track, you are free to use this as inspiration to create your own.Performance time - 3 minIf you happen to record or film this piece, feel free to tag #JLTStudio ... The sheet music is a transcription and arrangement including a Latin feel middle section. The rhythm section parts have chords for those wanting to vamp and for school bands there are written out scores. This arrangement is for a Saxophone section and for the line up I run which includes a Micro Korg Synth, a Nord and a Stage piano allowing for a versatility when arranging. The original has some closed string Guitar work as well as the lead line that dominates the song. I am performing this soon complete with the Whistles heard in the Latin Middle section. There is a written Lead Alto Solo which can also be improvised over for those band leaders that have band members interested. This arrangement is an accurate transcription of the Ray Anthony Orchestra recording. The 2 clarinet-2 tenor sax style is that used by The Glenn Miller Orchestra on Sunrise Serenade and other hit recordings. Original instrumental recordings of Twilight Time included those made respectively by the Three Suns[ (1944) and Les Brown & His Band of Renown (1945). Les Brown's version of Twilight Time was recorded in November 1944 and released in early 1945 as the B-side of Sentimental Journey, the first recording of that song. While the A-side featured Doris Day's vocals, Twilight Time was an instrumental. The Platters had a top 10 recording of it in 1960.

Of course it features a trumpet solo that is always a crowd pleasing selection at dances or concerts.Scored AATTB-8 Brass-piano, string bass, drum set, score. All parts are not difficult for any good high school jazz band. The closing trumpet finale can be played 8va lower, although is much more effective as written.
