It opens with a fanfare-like passage for saxes, followed by trumpets and trombones, before getting into the swinging blues groove. After the first two choruses, the opening returns as a bridge passage before the open for solos middle section.Solos are based on a 12 bar blues pattern and should be 24 bars long. A sample written out solo is included in Tenor Sax 1 and Trombone 2, for those who are less confident at improvising. The main blues returns with a bit more pizazz before ending on the fanfare like passage for the whole band.Duration: 2'10 to 4' depending on number of solos.

(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!

Cullen Smith wrote the original edition in less than an hour after seeing Snarky Puppy live at the Oklahoma City Tower Theater during the Summer of 2022. Cullen's first words after completing the first draft were That took a suspiciously short amount of time to write... and as a result Cullen came up with the name Suspicious Package because it just sounded cool and fitting with the attitude of the music he wrote.Later on, Cullen Smith would premier the Jazz combo version of Suspicious Package at the University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab in November of 2022. Cullen Smith would give his Music Education String Bass Degree recital in March of 2023 where he performed Suspicious Package along with two other works called Suspicious Delivery and Suspicious Mixtape. Not So Quiet Please is one of five transcription/Arrangements (Carioca, Hawaiian War Chant, Well Git IT, Oop Bop Sh' Bam) I did for the Buddy Rich Retrospective at the Kool Jazz festival in 1982. After transcribing the originals I updated & re-arranged them to Buddy's liking without obscuring the intent of the originals. This arrangement is a composite of two recordings Buddy did of Quiet with Tommy Dorsey. The solo trumpet (first time at M. 9) can be played with all four trumpets both times if you choose and certain sections can be altered to suit your performance. We agreed on adding the eight bar shout after the drum solo to make the ending a little less anticlimactic. If you prefer, you can jump to M. 85 after the drum solo like the original. The drummer can stay on the toms and bass drum for the entire piece or alternate with a regular ride/hi hat swing pattern.

Blues For Lester (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an extended piece with an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, contemporary classical, and blues. It is an expression of my admiration for Lester Young, the great tenor saxophonist, who had many quirky qualities in his music. This piece draws upon aspects of Lester Young's playing that I admire and have internalized: His horizontal approach to harmony, how he played around with time in his phrasing, used wrong notes (from a vertical chord perspective) at times, and had an audacious sense of humor. These are expressed in Blues For Lester in my own style. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

Tannenbaum, Replanted is a complete reworking of the very popular Weihnachtslied O Tannenbaum, which will even be familiar to many people from non-German-speaking countries. However, this is not an arrangement for purists, as the well-known melody in 3/4 time is presented here in a reharmonized up-tempo 4/4 time. The piece starts with a gently driving Latin-style groove and transforms to a Swing middle section, returning to the Latin groove at the end. I’ve not used a standard Latin beat here, instead a groove based loosely on the bossa nova. All the accompanying motifs in the saxes, trumpets, and trombones are drawn from the original melody.The Outro requires your lead alto and tenor saxophone players to improvise, alternating every two measures. I’ve left it up to the players to decide who starts first. Likewise, one or both players can improvise over the final chord.The flute part is optional, but does add a very distinctive sound over the top of the band, particularly in the quieter passages.
