Tannenbaum, Replanted is a complete reworking of the very popular Weihnachtslied O Tannenbaum, which will even be familiar to many people from non-German-speaking countries. However, this is not an arrangement for purists, as the well-known melody in 3/4 time is presented here in a reharmonized up-tempo 4/4 time. The piece starts with a gently driving Latin-style groove and transforms to a Swing middle section, returning to the Latin groove at the end. I’ve not used a standard Latin beat here, instead a groove based loosely on the bossa nova. All the accompanying motifs in the saxes, trumpets, and trombones are drawn from the original melody.The Outro requires your lead alto and tenor saxophone players to improvise, alternating every two measures. I’ve left it up to the players to decide who starts first. Likewise, one or both players can improvise over the final chord.The flute part is optional, but does add a very distinctive sound over the top of the band, particularly in the quieter passages.

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. Here are the lyrics to They Came Here to Dance: 1.You may come here to eat and to drink.Lots of chins wag, and wine glasses clink. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

Novo Brasileiro was originally recorded on the CD - Todd Murphy and Bandazul (The recording that is posted here) which has 6 horns. It is a Brazilian style Bossa Nova and it has been expanded into Big Band format. There is some doubling in the sax section so you need 3 flutes (Alto 2, Tenor 2 and Bari). The flutes are in unison so you could do it with one although you would probable need a microphone to balance the whole band. There are two solos: Tenor Sax and Guitar. It is written in slow 2 instead of fast 4 which is the Brazilian tradition for Samba and Bossa Nova. A real crowd pleaser!
