She was reminiscing about a day when her grandsons Ian (7) and Zachary (4) had accompanied her with bongo drums, maracas and tambourines as she played her Yamaha Clavinova to a latin beat. She said it was so much fun and they had such a good time! From her poem I have created a song that tries to capture the essence of their experience. I incorporated little variations of When the Saints go Marching in to portray their jam session while also alluding to my mom as a Saint who will always be with us in spirit no matter what. When she marches into Heaven I am sure she will be asking Jesus what he wants for dinner. :) For every purchase of this song I will donate $1 to Breast Cancer Charities of America.

Published by Nemomusicpublishing (A0.1516093). This is a Big Band arrangement of the Beatles 1967 hit from the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hears Club Band album. Originally written by Paul when he was about 14 in 1956. For the recording, the song was recorded in a key different from the final version; it was sped up at the request of McCartne to make his voice sound younger. As it is in the orignal version arranged by George Martin in wheich the Clarinet was a predominant intrumental voice, this chart features Clarinet on the main melody and written or improvised solo. In addition, it also features a written or improvised Trumpet solo with the Lead Trumpet range up to G above the treble staff. Written in the original Cut Time feel of 2 it is a swing chart aimed at an intermediate band level suitable for high school and collge bands and sure to be a crowd favourite.

Published by Mike Dana Music (A0.1472109). About the piece: Welcome to the second chart I’ve done on a Beatles tune! I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

However, I don't think she would have a problem with this 1950's style jazz chart! This bluesy sounding chart in F is remeniscent of tunes from that time period. It is my sincere hope that your students will be inspired to listen to and learn the great music of that period after learning this tune.

Written for a tribute concert, Make Me A Blessing was a favorite hymn of a departed friend who was a member of the T-Town Jazz Band. Using this hymn as its foundation, this composition uses a total of ten well-known hymns in the public domain as melodies, solos, and backgrounds transitioning them all into big band style swing 4/4. Hymns include It Is Well With My Soul, Just As I Am, Abide With Me, My Hope Is Built On Nothing Else, Nothing But The Blood, When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, Amazing Grace, Be Thou My Vision, and Holy, Holy, Holy.
