Fast! That?s the way to describe this arrangement. The rhythm section is blazing (270 beats a minute!), but the horns are in half time. This will be a work out for any rhythm section, but the horns will be able to play it with ease. I like to put one arrangement on every record that really pushes the players, and this is the ONE!!! You gotta check out the audio sample on this one! This is the closer of the concert/performance/service hands down. This one will take a little work, but it will be well worth it. Don?t let this one scare you. With some work from just one soloist (listening to the demo), you can pull this off and be so glad you did! This is the most flexible Holiday/Christmas project you will ever find! This arrangement features a soloist plus full big band. Here is where the unbelievable flexibility comes in! There is a written out part for EVERY solo for trumpet, trombone, saxophone and a vocalist. 4 complete versions of this arrangement were recorded with each one featuring a different solo instrument. (there is a trumpet, trombone, saxophone and vocalist version of the entire record) Also, this arrangement was recorded with full big band, but you could use a 2/2/2 horn section (trumpet/sax/trombone) if you do not have access to all the players. ANY size group. ANY soloist on ANY song. Maximum flexibility! A strong ensemble shout chorus that will bring down the house. It is very playable. Solos - Guitar, Tenor Saxophone, muted Trumpet/Flugelhorn (or just open it up). This composition was written for Nolan Ryan Henderson, a student murdered in Mississippi. It begins with a drum build-up and a strong beginning. Letter A is written for a Guitar solo to go to town. The Saxophone part will be played as background for the last time. Letters B and C are full band sections. At the pause, allow the lead soloist or the drummer to work until the last note is cued. If the spirit is still high, the final note can be played with directed quarter note hits leading back to the 5th measure of letter E (shout section). Thank Hank is Rock 70’s arrangement similar to what I experienced under the direction of Hank Levy while a grad student at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. It offers students an opportunity to explore the odd meters he commonly used to formulate many of his works, only on an easier level for advanced middle school and high school players. Audiences will also enjoy this diversion from the typical meters used in most jazz arrangements. Although scored for full jazz ensemble, the arrangement will work for smaller groups that do not have the full instrumentation. Auxiliary cow bell and tambourine parts will add to the flavor that was so commonly used during this era of pop music. Try to get the70’s flavor by using as close to an organ sound as possible, but a piano may be substituted. . There is 36 measure improvisation section that uses three chords, one for every 12 measures, and jazz scales are included in all the wind parts to encourage students to improvise.

He served as bass trombonist and arranger with the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note from 1953 until 1958, and performed with the Kai Winding trombone Group from 1959 through 1960. George completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory, and earned his masters and Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He founded the jazz programs at both schools while he was a student. George also founded the jazz program at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (Muskegon, MI) in 1971 and led that program through 2004. After his retirement from James Madison University, he relocated to Deland, Florida, and led the jazz program at Stetson University until his passing in 2013.
