Howard (A0.998816). This is an original setting of the well-known Advent text, for use in worship or concerts at Christmas. The carol uses the octatonic scale and is primarily based on just two chords; triads on C and F sharp, each with added augmented fourths. This gives the music a mysterious and mystical quality, making this a very different version to Kirkpatrick's famous setting. The rocking back and forth of the two harmonies (with a striding bass line below) mimics the movement of Christ's crib. Each verse is texturally varied to maintain development and interest throughout. The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ.

This catchy solo voice or unison voices version of the original three-part anthem with accompaniment, sets a text by Revd Canon Dr Gordon Giles, and was composed for the 2022 RSCM Harold Smart Anthem Competition. The work plays with alternating A minor and A major tonalities, with three verses exploring forms of textural variation. The imitative recurring chorus is also varied on each return. The coda gradually builds in dynamics, texture and pitch, in setting repetitions of the word 'Amen', leading to the final A minor climax. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. The vocal line, for any solo voice or for unison voices, retains the folk tune contour throughout, within the range of low D to high D. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The 2-part SA and 4-part SATB versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer are also available via Sheet Music Plus. The piece unusually sets the familiar text within an aching minor key, in a slow tempo, and with generally quiet dynamics. A highly memorable, singable and repetitive main theme is supported by rippling arpeggios over a descending bass line. Within the rocking 6/8 time signature, an often modal accompaniment also features chains of gently warm seventh chords. The piece is appropriate for most standards of solo soprano or tenor. This Ave Maria, by the same composer, is also available from Sheet Music Plus in versions for SATB choir, and for SA choir.Â
