So one year I decided to write this one. Perhaps the ideal way to present this song is with a soloist who is joined by a choir of adults (or children!) singing in unison on the second and third choruses--emulating a choir of angels. When used this way, this song provides an easy way to stretch your rehearsal time at the Christmas season, as the choir can easily participate, yet there is no learning of extra parts. Brimming with worship of the Christ Child from the very first lyric, Heaven's Here to Stay begins by quietly evoking the atmosphere of the stable. When the chorus arrives, the jubilant singing of the angels arrives as well: Glory in the highest, for the Peace of heaven comes to earth! Glory in the highest--Hope itself was born in Jesus's birth. For Death is dying, Fear is cowering, Light is chasing Night away. The burning love of heaven's here to stay. The second verse takes us from the manger scene to the hills of Judea, where we hear Jesus's words: Come, you weary ones to me, I will give you rest. Trade your tattered rags for my robes of purest white. Come, you hungry, eat, be satisfied. You're all need, but I'm all giving; be still and just receive. This study includes 60 pieces selected from different periods which are used with their original accompaniments, was prepared in order to read music (solfeggio), one of the most important elements in music education, using examples selected from music literature in an enjoyable way. Care has been taken to ensure that the selected music displays color and diversity in terms of technique, style, and geography, and it aims to be an eye-opener. The pieces are arranged according to the level, and when new topics and elements are used, they are indicated on each piece. Dynamics were not used in the first 10 pieces while trying to preserve to the original dynamics used in the music, minor changes were made where necessary. When possible, the original tempos of the music have been kept, but the tempo of some instrumental music has been reconsidered for this anthology and given as an approximation (circa: ca.). The musical slurs used in the pieces show the musical sentences and the breathing places. Parts of the anthology pieces might be played or studied in different ways.

This song was commissioned to celebrate 162 years of ministry of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Milwaukee, WI. The final service will is/was on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Although the physical doors will close, the community will continue as will the many ministries begotten here such as The Next Door Foundation, and others. OSLC was my home church for many years, and I was one of the ministers of music there for some time. I played for funerals, baptisms and weddings there. I raised my children there. It was a place where memories of pain and joy embrace. I hope that this song recognizes the pain of the closing, but celebrates the years of vibrant ministry, and leaves us with a sense of hope. God does not dwell in temples but in hearts filled with Agape love. The song can also be used during the pandemic as we strive to be a church in spirit without walls. Program note — Composed by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) while sheltering in place during the coronavirus pandemic, Oure Light in Oure Night (2020) sets text by Julian of Norwich for voices with a nature soundtrack. The video format is designed especially for use by choirs singing remotely on an online platform such as Zoom, Cleanfeed, Jamulus, or other. Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble.
