Joanna Mills' passion is music and singing. From 1998 to 2018, she was the director of the Roncesvalles Gospel Choir and has written and directed many original children's musicals at Roncesvalles United Church. From 2011 to 2020 Joanna was the music director and head vocal teacher at Broadway Arts Centre. She performs frequently in local festivals and clubs with her six-voice folkgrass ensemble North of Queen and also sings with Toronto’s premiere rock choir newchoir. Joanna is an award-winning songwriter (Songdoor, Song of the Year, ISSA) and arranger and her works have been performed by choirs and bands all over the world. Trained formally in voice, piano, and oboe throughout her younger years, Joanna has sung in (and lead) various choirs, performed with the New Westminster Musical Theatre Guild, and teaches Musical Theatre, piano, and voice at her studio in Toronto, Ontario.

UPC: 749193018163.The cover of this anthem has the entire text of Wm. Byrd's 'Reasons to learn to sing' from which composer Jane Marshall selected the anthem words. Matching the text to four different moods of the ancient modes (or scales) she comes up with tone colors seldom experienced in today's church anthems. The Dorian mode of the 1st section has a similar feeling to natural minor scale. The Lydian mode, of the 2nd section, is very bright, like a major scale with a raised 4th degree. The Phrygian mode, section 3, is very somber, like a natural minor scale with lowered 2nd degree. The 4th section, 'Since singing is so good a thing', uses the most contemporary of the scales, the Mixolydian. It is a major scale with a lowered 7th degree, and this is characteristic of much of our present rock and folk music.

When Joaquin Miller first purchased The Hights, which after his death became Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland, the hills had been clearcut. He planted every tree in the park-most native, some exotic-and today, school children visit there to learn about the native species of the East Bay environment and watersheds. The park is home to Friends of Sausal Creek, a native plant society that works to restore the original ecosystem. Joaquin Miller (went walkin’) imagines the poet wandering through a pristine habitat of red-tailed hawks and white-tailed deer, enjoying the native grasses, trees, and flowers. The song contains a bit of Oakland history (the redwood trees were used to build San Francisco), symbolism (California's golden poppy) and science (the watershed that leads to the Bay), all in the romantic spirit of poetic observance.
