Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1503126). This piece is an extended, three movement Violin Sonata for violin and piano. The work explores the subtitle concept of 'circling'. This is pursued through a wide variety of musical elements. These include: circling melodies, repetitive chains of (modulating) chord sequences, motoric cross-rhythms and syncopation, heterophonic canonic textures, and large-scale concentric structures. The fast, first movement is in a loose symmetrical sonata form in D (modal) minor. The resolute and scalic first subject, based on the opening core motif, is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and repetitive, cantabile second theme. The ensuing development section passes through various keys, with a new, modal third theme at its centre, featuring parallel motion, syncopation, and an ostinato in the accompaniment. The varied recapitulation presents the opening two themes in reverse order (thus giving overall structural symmetry to the movement). The heart of the work as a whole is the slow romanza-like second movement, centred on G. In ternary form, the outer sections present a highly memorable lyrical theme in a series of modulating and canonic textural variations. The contrasting middle section is much more unsettled in its three varied statements of a new theme accompanied by uncertain minor sevenths chords. The rondo-like finale in D is the most minimalist in style and rhythm. A circling, motivic and scalic main theme appears between highly contrasting episodes. The first of these is a folk-like rustic theme, while the second is a sentimental melody, played over an arpeggio and descending bass line accompaniment. Heard 3 times, in 3 different keys and registers, this idea leads to an recap of the main rondo theme, signalling the end of the work. Overall, the piece is genuinely melodic and is accessible to the listener. The work is suitable for performance by higher grade or professional violinists and pianists. In fact, there is no comparison. However, my sincere hope is that since I have rendered some of Beethoven’s music as duets, his music is now more readily available to all permitting a greater number of musicians and all the people who hear their performances to come to know and love a bit of the world’s most valuable, breathtaking and beautiful music. In truth, Beethoven’s music has stood the test of time. He astonished people in his day whenever he performed his music or had his music played. He still does today. To be sure, his music has enhanced and enriched the lives of many of us for over 200 years. In performing and listening to these Scherzi you will find the whole of each work a marvel of Beethoven’s skill with sections reaching the sublime. Few composers have been able to write down on paper music of such incredible beauty that it reflects the awesome splendor of God’s creation. It was first performed during the Carnival season of 1718 at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice. Unlike the more than 50 operas based on the romance of Rinaldo and Armida, Vivaldi's version starts during previous events before the war against the Crusaders. Armida was revived for the Carnival season of 1738, with much of the music rewritten, and arias by Leonardo Leo added. Act II of the original version of the opera is now lost. The Level is Early Advance and the duration is approximately 4.13 minutes. It could be played in any type of recital/concert.

I was inspired to create this suite after the horrendous Paris attacks in 2015, to show our solidarity with French, and love for their music. I originally made an arrangement for string orchestra designed to be played by groups on different ability levels. This arrangement for two violas is intended for very advanced students, skilled amateurs, or professionals. I have not included any fingerings so as to leave this to the artistic choice of each performer. The arrangement includes seven selections: Bizet’s Carmen and L'Arésienne, Alouette, Frère Jacques, Offenbach’s Can-Can, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and La Marseillaise (French National Anthem) by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle. There are also brief quotes from Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and Schumann's Two Grenadiers. The entire suite is approximately eight minutes in length. Score and parts are included.

This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city. We have a collaboration between the trumpet wizardry of Wynton Marsalis and Mark O’Connor’s extraordinary virtuosity on the fiddle. The music is suited for advanced levels. At the outset of the war in 2022, Mark and Maggie O'Connor participated in an online-performance of Verbovaya Doschechka with members of the Kyiv Symphony recording their violin parts from basements turned bunkers attempting to shield themselves from Russian missiles. Mark and Maggie were so moved by this musical experience and the beauty of this piece of music that Mark O'Connor arranged it for two violins to honor the hopes and safety of the Ukrainian people on their album Life After Life.
