Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1503126). This piece is an extended, three movement Violin Sonata for violin and piano. The work explores the subtitle concept of 'circling'. This is pursued through a wide variety of musical elements. These include: circling melodies, repetitive chains of (modulating) chord sequences, motoric cross-rhythms and syncopation, heterophonic canonic textures, and large-scale concentric structures. The fast, first movement is in a loose symmetrical sonata form in D (modal) minor. The resolute and scalic first subject, based on the opening core motif, is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and repetitive, cantabile second theme. The ensuing development section passes through various keys, with a new, modal third theme at its centre, featuring parallel motion, syncopation, and an ostinato in the accompaniment. The varied recapitulation presents the opening two themes in reverse order (thus giving overall structural symmetry to the movement). The heart of the work as a whole is the slow romanza-like second movement, centred on G. In ternary form, the outer sections present a highly memorable lyrical theme in a series of modulating and canonic textural variations. The contrasting middle section is much more unsettled in its three varied statements of a new theme accompanied by uncertain minor sevenths chords. The rondo-like finale in D is the most minimalist in style and rhythm. A circling, motivic and scalic main theme appears between highly contrasting episodes. The first of these is a folk-like rustic theme, while the second is a sentimental melody, played over an arpeggio and descending bass line accompaniment. Heard 3 times, in 3 different keys and registers, this idea leads to an recap of the main rondo theme, signalling the end of the work. Overall, the piece is genuinely melodic and is accessible to the listener. The work is suitable for performance by higher grade or professional violinists and pianists. During a return visit to my Alma Mater, the University of California, San Diego I heard the sounds of a far-off violin and followed them, finding myself in front of the door of János Négysey, the violin professor at the university. We hadn't seen each other in over 20 years. While catching up on our lives since my graduation, János took out several stunning computer paintings he had recently completed. I immediately suggested that I do a new work for two violins based on his art. I asked to see more and soon when I left his office I had a collection of paintings from which to choose. A year later the piece was completed and he programmed it for a recital at the University. They were premiered on April 10, 2001 by János and Päivikki Nykter, also a virtuoso violinist. The images were projected on several screens across the width of the stage. Afterwards, János and I would meet on Skype to keep up to date and there was always a healthy amount of laughter. When he passed away suddenly in 2013 I was shocked and saddened. I still miss his insights, sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge. The duration is approximately 33 minutes and there are 12 color paintings included with the score. Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.760438). Armida al campo d'Egitto is an opera in three acts by Antonio Vivaldi to a libretto by Giovanni Palazzo. It was first performed during the Carnival season of 1718 at the Teatro San Moisè in Venice. Unlike the more than 50 operas based on the romance of Rinaldo and Armida, Vivaldi's version starts during previous events before the war against the Crusaders. Armida was revived for the Carnival season of 1738, with much of the music rewritten, and arias by Leonardo Leo added. Act II of the original version of the opera is now lost. The Level is Early Advance and the duration is approximately 4.13 minutes. It could be played in any type of recital/concert.

I was inspired to create this suite after the horrendous Paris attacks in 2015, to show our solidarity with French, and love for their music. I originally made an arrangement for string orchestra designed to be played by groups on different ability levels. This arrangement for two violas is intended for very advanced students, skilled amateurs, or professionals. I have not included any fingerings so as to leave this to the artistic choice of each performer. The arrangement includes seven selections: Bizet’s Carmen and L'Arésienne, Alouette, Frère Jacques, Offenbach’s Can-Can, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and La Marseillaise (French National Anthem) by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle. There are also brief quotes from Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and Schumann's Two Grenadiers. The entire suite is approximately eight minutes in length. Score and parts are included.

I wrote most of the pizzicato section first, and everyone said it sounded like rain. I'm both a classical musician and a fiddler, and I've always been interested in the intersection between classical western art music and folk music. It was recorded by O’Connor and Wynton Marsalis for the album Liberty!. The recording was also used throughout the film documentary produced for PBS, Liberty! The American Revolution. This may very well be the first duet ever written for trumpet and violin. Summarized as a triumph by album notes writer Thomas Fleming, he goes on to characterize the duet by saying Marsalis’ sound echoes the noble sadness of this celebration of the heroic death of British General James Wolfe before Quebec in 1759. The piece turns into a musical gallop, evoking the surging seesaw battle Wolfe’s army fought outside the walls of the fortress city.
