This collection of duos is designed to give pleasure and performance opportunities to young violinists and is specifically designed to complement the Colourstrings curriculum for violin instruction. The melodies used in the duos include some of the melodies use in the Colourstrings curriculum, as well as melodies used in early childhood music programs in Australia and other English-speaking countries. The pieces are arranged systematically and are intended to inspire young players through the chance to play chamber music with more advanced students or with their teacher. In each case the first violin part has simple material, with more advanced material in the second violin. Each piece is designed to reflect something of the text of the original song, and the character of each piece should be explored in performance It is hoped that these duos may be a source of pleasure for students and a useful resource for teachers.

The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyels career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyels productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. Pleyel composed duos of varying technical difficulty in order to appeal to the widest possible market and he clearly intended that players progress from easy works, signalled by titles such as Duo Facile or Petit Duo, to more ambitious works. The present works, composed ca 1788, lie between these two extremes: they require players with well-developed techniques but do not present exceptional difficulties to the performer. They are graceful, attractive works and their great popularity in Pleyels lifetime comes as no surprise to the modern performer.

This arrangement is written for two violins and piano, with intermediate to advanced difficulty, intended for performance in concert halls. This arrangement is made based on the original 1994 recording, however, with some unique features: 1. The arrangement starts by introducing each instrument one by one, from the piano (the music box intro), 1st violins, then 2nd violins, then all instruments. 2. Arpeggiated running notes on the piano part up to B6 (on the bridge), which is a place to show off. 3. A repeated end of the last chorus before the outro, where the 2nd and 3rd repetition gets more and more virtuosic as it gets more intense, another place to show off for the violins (the pianist also plays arpeggiated running notes). 4. High notes up to B6 (on the outro) for the violins, and natural harmonics on some notes (i.e. on E6). This arrangement is challenging, fast-paced (slow practice is recommended), both for the pianist and violinists, but it's fun :D Notation features: 1. Some fingerings on the piano are added. This fingering is based on my own performance in a recital, however, feel free to use your own. 2. Rehearsal marks start from the verse intro (bar 13), which is marked, for example, A-I, where this refers to the small intro before letter A. This applies to B onwards. This arrangement adapted for violin duo was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice.Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

I was inspired to create this suite after the horrendous Paris attacks in 2015, to show our solidarity with French, and love for their music. I originally made an arrangement for string orchestra designed to be played by groups on different ability levels. This arrangement for two violas is intended for very advanced students, skilled amateurs, or professionals. I have not included any fingerings so as to leave this to the artistic choice of each performer. The arrangement includes seven selections: Bizet’s Carmen and L'Arésienne, Alouette, Frère Jacques, Offenbach’s Can-Can, Debussy’s Clair de Lune and La Marseillaise (French National Anthem) by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle. There are also brief quotes from Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and Schumann's Two Grenadiers. The entire suite is approximately eight minutes in length. Score and parts are included.
