It looks like a giant wooden teardrop with 67 strings all across it like the inside of a piano. Is it a zither? No, she says - it's a bandura. It's the traditional bardic instrument of Ukraine. In fact it's such a strong symbol of Ukrainian national identity, that the Soviets didn't allow it to be played. So Oksana proudly learned the bandura only after she moved to the USA. She invited me to her home, and into the Ukrainian diaspora, where we played many of these tunes on bandura and violin. Here's my arrangement of Little Polka for two violins.

Known by the name Didone Abbandonata the sonata is a counterpart to Tartini's famous Devil's Trill. This arrangement for violin duet keeps the solo line in the first violin and accompaniment in the second. For added interest performers can switch parts on each repeat.

Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. A slow Hora in triple meter is followed by a faster Freylach version of the same melody in 4. Kandel’s Hora is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. With a performance time of three minutes, this version of Kandel’s Hora is perfect for concert performances, both formal and informal.
