Opus/Catalog Number: Op.74, No.2, B.117 Key/Tone: G Minor Movements/Sections: 1 (Andantino) Year/Date of Composition: 1838 Difficulty: Grade 4/12 (Intermediate) Obs.: The 17 Polish Songs, Op. 74 were assembled posthumously and are not in chronological order. This particular song, Wiosna [Spring], although the second song in the set, was actually the fourteenth Chopin wrote. It was composed in 1838 and first published in Berlin in 1857. It is thus contemporary with the Op. 33 mazurkas and Op. 40 polonaises. Chopin's Polish song Wiosna is set on a text by the composer's friend and Polish poet Stefan Witwicki (1801-1847). Witwicki's descriptions of blossoming flowers and animals in green pastures contrast with gloomy ruminations. The music is beautifully simple and quite melancholic. This piano piece Wiosna is in fact the piano part of the song Wiosna. Chopin arranged it for piano solo several times for his friends between 1838 and 1848.Franz Liszt also transcribed it for the second of his Chants polonais. This is an arrangement for 2 Violins.

The name Nocturne (meaning of the night) was originally an ensemble piece in the 18th century in several movements used for for evening parties. Later In the 19thc it's one movement form, it was adopted by John Field and later popularised by Chopin. It generally has a tranquil lyrical melody and is very romantic and expressive. I have tried to keep these elements in this Nocturne. Written here for Violin Duet and Piano, the parts are equally divided. Highest note top F sharp, violin 1 (once). Bowing has been left to the performer. It is written in the key of concert B minor it has a very gentle opening with harmonies evolving around a cycle of 5th's in places. The piece has three definite sections- the lyrical melody to begin with, a middle section building to a climax before a return to the 1st section. This is followed by a transitional contrasting section (poco piu mosso) wandering through a few keys to settle on an inner pedal tonic note chime. Gentle chords restore the opening once more- this opening theme climaxes towards the end and a gentle reflection of the opening bars concludes the piece.It is 4 mins 20 in length and price is for the full score and parts.I have set it to intermediate level, but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Versions for Flute Duet, Flute and Clarinet Duet and Solo Piano are also available.

This arrangement is for two Early Intermediate violins and provides an interesting and melodic etude or performance piece for student players.The tune starts in D major for the A part then goes to A Mixolydian for the B part. The arrangement then moves through A Major and D Mixolydian to C Minor ending in C Major providing interesting variations on the original theme. A score and a single sheet for each instrument is provided here. The score includes chords for accompanying instruments. Then it modulates into G minor. It concludes in G Major with the 2 violins playing sixteenths in horn fifths while the piano has the melody. Both violins are equal in difficulty and are in 1st, 2nd and 3rd position. The first violin uses 4th finger extension for E-flat. Both violins play runs of the D Major scale. Bowing techniques are legato as well as spiccato brush stroke.
