This duet is both fun to play and a great, simple exercise for learning to shift from first to third position. The most important thing in this duet is to play in tune. When you play a note with the third finger in first position, then play the same note with the first finger in third position, make sure they are exactly the same pitch! Playing the duet with a partner helps. If you enjoy this arrangement, you are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. This simple arrangement adapted for violin duo was imagined for a group of beginner students who want to start their immersion in classical music, of course with the help of a teacher. Even though the original work is for strings, this did not prevent this beautiful adaptation, where the original essence of the work was maintained, being made only an adaptation of the tonality and some adaptations in the tessitura of the instruments. This piece can be used for professional and academic recitals, didactic material and repertoire for ensemble practice as well, which does not prevent professional musicians and instructors from using it for performances of their preference.Luigi Boccherini was born in the city of Lucca, in northern Italy. He studied cello and became a virtuoso who eventually moved to Spain, where he worked with the Spanish royal family for the rest of his life. His String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5, G 275, was written in 1771 and published in 1775, and is one of his most famous works.The quintet is famous for its minuet and trio, third movement which is often played as an independent piece outside the context of the full quintet. This is notably the most famous, it is in 3/4 time, in the key of E Major modulating to A Major. This is a beautiful work, and not just the third movement, with good partial writing for all. The lovely, flowing melodies and rhythms are typical of Boccherini. The quintet is suitable for both concerts and home performances.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1503126). This piece is an extended, three movement Violin Sonata for violin and piano. The work explores the subtitle concept of 'circling'. This is pursued through a wide variety of musical elements. These include: circling melodies, repetitive chains of (modulating) chord sequences, motoric cross-rhythms and syncopation, heterophonic canonic textures, and large-scale concentric structures. The fast, first movement is in a loose symmetrical sonata form in D (modal) minor. The resolute and scalic first subject, based on the opening core motif, is followed by a transition to a more lyrical and repetitive, cantabile second theme. The ensuing development section passes through various keys, with a new, modal third theme at its centre, featuring parallel motion, syncopation, and an ostinato in the accompaniment. The varied recapitulation presents the opening two themes in reverse order (thus giving overall structural symmetry to the movement). The heart of the work as a whole is the slow romanza-like second movement, centred on G. In ternary form, the outer sections present a highly memorable lyrical theme in a series of modulating and canonic textural variations. The contrasting middle section is much more unsettled in its three varied statements of a new theme accompanied by uncertain minor sevenths chords. The rondo-like finale in D is the most minimalist in style and rhythm. A circling, motivic and scalic main theme appears between highly contrasting episodes. The first of these is a folk-like rustic theme, while the second is a sentimental melody, played over an arpeggio and descending bass line accompaniment. Heard 3 times, in 3 different keys and registers, this idea leads to an recap of the main rondo theme, signalling the end of the work. Overall, the piece is genuinely melodic and is accessible to the listener. The work is suitable for performance by higher grade or professional violinists and pianists. Led by not just one violin but two, the roles of leading voice and accompaniment constantly switch between the three instruments.All three movements feature two strongly contrasting themes and each of the three approaches the themes' development in a unique way.The first movement's tension resolves in a kind of anti-climax, a moment of greatest fragility after the built-up tension, which then returns to a (almost) note-perfect reprise of the exposition, to show that in the end nothing has changed.The second movement even intensifies the struggle between the two themes, with ultimately one of them taking over.In the third movement, an energetic waltz, no effort is even made to unify it's two themes, they just stand block-like against each other.

A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred.
