This Indie-Rock song by The Shins from their 2001 album Oh, Inverted World was a special request - one of many - by a bride & groom for their wedding. My first reaction was one of doubt as I pondered how I could make this divergent sound work for a String Trio. The more I listened, I heard the haunting melody, and the lyrics speaking of internal struggles and the need for introspection. Yes, caring can be very unsettling and at times even frightening. Relationships are complex. You have to invest emotionally. (...kind of like I had to do to pen this compostion for strings.) The arrangement is simple and straight-forward, but it works. After all, we often have to find comfort in unconventional choices. As the lyrics tell us: ...never got cold wearing nothing in the snow..
