It refers (probably tongue in cheek) to the military defeats of Napoleon Bonaparte, the famed military commander and emperor of France. It remains popular today in the old-time, bluegrass and contra dance repertoires. It is arranged here for a traditional Intermediate String Trio (two violins and cello) to be played for fun, a quick and enjoyable concert encore or as a festival or contest entry. Published by Sandy McIntire (A0.1118637). HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING, also known as MY LIFE FLOWS ON IN ENDLESS SONG, was composed by Robert Lowry who fit his lyric to an early American folk tune. First appearing shortly after the American Civil War, the hymn took over a century to gain in popularity. Pete Seeger revived the hymn in the 1960s, and it has gained in popularity since then. Irish artist Enya recorded it in 1991 in her album, Shepherd Moons. This arrangement is for an INTERMEDIATE STRING ENSEMBLE (two violins and cello). Separate sheets for each instrument are provided. Its haunting and nostalgic melody and harmonies are perfect for performance as a string trio. Other similar arrangements by McIntire are Fairest Lord Jesus and Flowers of Edinburgh, as well as an intermediate piano arrangement of this song are also available at this web site.

Arkansas Traveler is an old American Folk Song made popular by Sanford Faulkner, an Arkansas fiddler, who was responsible in large part for the story forming the basis of the song which was the official song of Arkansas from 1949 to 1963 and the state historical song since 1987. The tune is often played by old-time and bluegrass bands, and it has been featured in 20th century movie cartoons. This arrangement is for an Intermediate String Trio (two violins and cello) with the goal of giving the players as well as the audience a good time. As usual in McIntire's string trio arrangements, the players bounce the melody back and forth among themselves with some surprising collaborations as well. This arrangement is recommended for contests and festivals, and it would also make a great 3 minute encore.

It was recorded in 1928 by Harry McClintock and popularized in the 1930s by Woody Guthrie and again in the 1960s by Pete Seeger. Over the years, the words, originally bawdy, changed to fit the times and audiences, but always remained true to the hobo's dream of paradise. This arrangement (without lyrics) is for an Intermediate String trio (two violins and cello).
