Funeral March for a Marionette is,perhaps, composer Charles Gounod's most famous composition. This is largelybecause it was used as the theme song of the popular 1950s television series AlfredHitchkok Presents.

Gounod wrote the piece in 1872. Thepiece, originally for piano, describes the story of a marionette who is killedin a duel. In the original score, Gounod included comments in French matchingthe action in the story to the music:

� La Marionnette est cass�e!!!(The marionette is broken!!!)

� Murmure de regrets de la troupe(Murmurs of regret from the troupe)

� Le Cort�ge (The procession)

� Ici plusieurs des principaux personnages de la troupes'arr�tent pour se rafra�chir (Here many of the principalpersonages stop for refreshments)

� Retour � la maison (Return to the house)
