Because amateur performers would gather in unusual permutations of players, this Trio was quickly arranged for many other combinations of instruments: versions exist for two violins and bass line, two flutes and viola, two clarinets and bassoon, as a sonata for violin and piano, and in various piano settings. .In 1806, Beethoven approved an arrangement (not by him) for two violins and viola, which was published that year. It was assigned the misleadingly-high opus number of 87, which would seem to place it near the Seventh Symphony; in fact, this music was written before Beethoven had published his Opus 1.

This brilliant Contemporary Classical piece borrows from many different styles. It is a Sonatina in 3 sections. The buoyant first section is quite Classical with a bit of fanfare, and then an Alberti Bass section that is an homage to Mozart. The expressive middle section is New Age in style and is in 7/4 Time Signature (3/4 then 4/4 in alternating sets, so not hard). The final section goes through several themes and a key change; having an ornamented Baroque theme, then a Classical theme reminiscent of the opening, then concluding with a Romantic era toccata. There are Chorale-like bridges linking the many sections and themes.

It also achieves these effects by employing the violin’s large palette of techniques and tone colours, including pizzicato, spiccato, the warm sul G tone, rolled 4-string arpeggiations, double stops, contrasts in dynamics and ornamental flourishes.

The outer sections are perky, playful and dance-like, and they frame a slow, luscious middle section where the soloists have some high harmonics.I would guess that the orchestral players would need to be at about Grade 4/5 upwards to manage this comfortably.

The original piece is part of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, written for his patron Prince Leopold sometime between the years 1717 and 1723. The title comes from violinist August Wilhelmj’s late 19th century arrangement of the piece for violin and piano. By transposing the key of the piece from its original D major to C major, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string. The air is usually played slowly and freely, and features an intertwining harmony and melody.

This soon leads into a lively folk-like Moderato Dance section with a great catchy tune and punchy rhythms. These two different sections compliment one another, adding variety and excitement as they repeat themselves half way through so that both melodies get plenty of work-out! The piece would very much suit young players, although amateurs and professionals alike can enjoy it.

Flégier is principally known as havng composed the famous song for bass and orchestra “Le Corâ€, but he also wronte more than 300 works for piano, (including a concerto), many songs, an opéra-comique “Fatima, the oratorio Ossian and many chamber works, including the first “dixtuor†for wind quintet and string quintet.This work is a movement from the composer's Fantaisie-Ballet for orchestra, arranged by the composer in the form of a classical adage. The rest of the work is unfortunately lost.
